The guys at Dnet are masters of understatement.

<< :: 13-Jun-2001 16:54 (Wednesday) ::
Yesterday, June 12th, we had some minor problems with our keymaster. This
resulted in backlogs on both the proxies and the master. As a result, the
stats for June 12th are not correct.

We hope to process all of the backlog soon, so your missing June-12-blocks
should show up in the next couple of days.

"Minor" problems? Half the entire world's production is missing.

Again, Dnet, if you're reading this, where are the missing blocks from the 7th and the 10th?

Russ, NCNE

Good one, Russ!

Also, the words "hope" and "should" would make me worry. 😉

Rob

So according to Dnet, TACube would be an average participant and Team Anandtech is an OK team? 😉

Some people say that the stats mess-up of the 12th was coused by a hudge amount of members of the Slashdot team. Somebody overthere had started a topic about the percentage of the RC5 contest and in a reaction to that topic almost all their members visited the d.net stats while the statsrun just started. That was the couse of the missing blocks of the 12th (so they say!)

You can see the topic on /. over
here

Russ, compared to some of the things that have happened in the past, half the world's blocks are a minor thing. Think long term, you get better things to worry about.🙂

Think bigger... think bigger...

Okay, what if Dnet managed to "misplace" the correct key on the 12th? Would that qualify as a "bigger" issue? :Q 😕

I think that's a load of crap. There aren't that much people interested in RC5 on Slashdot. Otherwise they would have a much higher outage than the louzy 600k they're producing right now.

The backlog was do to a master outage. The system worked as designed. The master goes down the fullservers still feed you work and hold your work till they can communicate with the master. No work has been lost its just taking time to recover from an outage. We know it doesn't satisfy you need for stats and your need for stats yesterday, but what would you rather, the master go down and you not be able to get new work and your work you completed not be accepted when you return it? You sit there for a few hours while your computer sits idle not doing anything at all, not helping you to reach your stats potential?

These things happen, they have always happened, they will continue to happen. But we have not lost work, it is just backlogged. The system is fully redundant and just because you don't get stats the day you submitted them does not mean work has been lost.

Since the proxtinfo page is down due to the move to the new server I'm pasting the current line of the master

keymaster NOC 324 18.7h RC5/64 259011.80 759140/6607226

All fullservers are back to 0 left to send to the master. The number is slowly coming down and should be back by the end of today. Thats 6 million left to process, it should have no problem finishing that today. You should see an increased number of results today as well as yesterday.

Thanks
moose

wh00p!
looks like we either had a pretty good day and/or we got some blocks back...

ragiepew,

We got back approximately 55K of the 270K missing this month.

According to Dnet (they did get back to me), TA Cube had about 75,000 blocks that were dupes due to randoms, so we'll NEVER see those. That still leaves about 140,000 blocks unaccounted for this month alone.

Russ, NCNE

I think from time to time, we ([french mode]ze dreadfull dpc[/french mode]) need to do a Megaflush to keep the servers alert so they won't fall out for some stupid reason. 😉

...AH.... Good to see the backlog back....... 😀

"about 75,000 blocks that were dupes" ??
Man, you got to make your buffers a little bigger !
I keep 3 days of work on every machine, and then 3 more days on my pproxy, which in turn relies on the Fed pproxy to have some more, which in turn relies on the TA RR.... no dupes for me, unless I screw big time.

/edit : oh, and I dont understand about that french mode

from decibel's plan

A lot of people are missing work from June 12th. We're honestly not sure
what happened this time, but we're looking into it. Stay tuned.

oh great, they don't know why. 🙁

That was before he knew there was a backlog in the master server. Check your stats today things should be close to being back to normal.

Moose

LeBlatt,

The dupes had nothing to do with any problems on TA Cube's end. It was because of randoms done by other people. I keep plenty of blocks buffered in the pproxy.

As for the 12th, it now looks like most of the missing blocks have been credited.

Russ, NCNE

Can someone answer me this..? how do the DPC not lose millions of blocks to randoms when they save for their
"mega flushes" for what seems like months?

Am i missing something here?... it seems to me that if we hang on to blocks for just a short time they fall victim to randoms..
