The Gunners Dream-by Pink Floyd off of the album The Final Cut

floating down through the clouds
memories come rushing up to meet me now
in the space between the heavens
and the corner of some foreign field
i had a dream
i had a dream
goodbye max
goodbye ma
after the service when your walking slowly to the car
and the silver in her hair shines in the cold november air
you hear the tolling bell
and touch the silk in your lapel
and as the tear drops rise the meet the comfort of the band
you take her frail hand
and hold on to the dream

a place to stay
enough to eat
somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
where you can speak out loud
about your doubts and fears
and what's more no-one ever disappears
you never hear their standard issue kicking in your door
you can relax on both sides of the tracks
and maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
and everyone has recourse to the law
and no-one kills the children anymore
and no-one kills the children anymore

night after night
going round and round my brain
his dream is driving me insane
in the corner of some foreign field
the gunner sleeps tonight
whats done is done
we cannot just write off his final scene
take heed of his dream
take heed

For some reason this song struck a chord with me. I just listened to it for the first time, and in particular the middle part brought great sadness to me, in connection with the recent events.

I too dream of a place where no-one kills the children anymore.

The Final Cut is a great Floyd Album.

Last one with Waters and Gilmour together.

I never really thought about that song in light of recent events. Going to have to listen to it again.....

I had a recurring dream while stationed in Germany 1982-1986 with an M1 tank battalion. My tank platoon was on an open terrain and from lett to right horizon we were being rushed by these guys in dirty grey uniforms and they swarmed what must have been 60 deep, shoulder to shoulder. My tanks were rushing forward and crashed right into them. The M1 has a knife edgelike front slope. Then our tanks turn their machineguns onto each other to clear the soldiers swarming up the sides. This was a peacetime experience. I just saw a brief dream interrepretation piece on NBC explaining how dreams are usually a product of the day proceeding it. These were only dreams. I dread the nightmares that the NYC firefighters, police, first response and all other survivors will have.:(
