Last person is fucking economically ignorant. Inflation is tied to the money supply. End of story.

I think there's more to the story than that. There's the rate of circulation, for one thing. I mean Thatcher, in her earliest period, was keen on monetarism and 'tight money', but the first thing that happened after she got in and restricted the money supply was that inflation surged. Apparently that was becuase the rate of circulation of money increased. There was less money available, but it circulated faster.

In all fairness, it is .49 with the store card which is a nice savings. And is it really Thanksgiving if my sis-n-law with the strong southern drawl, doesn't bring Jiffy corn casserole?

Looks like $0.64 to me, 1 cent off, I think you're misreading the 49t code as a price.

I don't do store cards. Price needs to be the same for all, so spyware/tracking involved. I completely stopped going to several stores after they started that nonsense.

Hookers in your local providences got tired of carrying pennies and bags of milk around?
I don't know what kind of hookers you are hiring that involves pennies...

And what you do with your hookers and milk bags is none of my concern.

.99 cent chicken drums or thighs at kroger here. also $1.49 split breasts. tempted to get some and make some stock and schmaltz

A more apples to apples situation might be I bought a Vizio 60" semi-smart (compared with smart functions of today's tvs) HDTV in 2012 on Black Friday for $688 and was thrilled with the low price. Did not see better price for a long time. Amazon's pre-black friday price was $949. Today a 65" Vizio 4K UHD smart tv goes for $398 and a 55" for $314. BIG drop.
counterpoint: you can't eat a tv.

- I like to make a game out of making cheap clean dinners for the fam that also don't suck. Snagged 2lbs of Garlic Pepper Marinated chicken thighs, 1lb of broccoli, and some brown rice for $23 today from our local small grocer for our family of 4.

Tossed a cube of chicken bouillon in with the rice while it cooked, cooked the chicken on a wire rack above the broccoli in the oven so the drippings flavored the veg (all in a roasting pan lined with parchment paper mind you, keeping the mess and pans down here).

Successful dinner that joined the clean plate club, and for ~$5 a person for fresh ingredients it was hard to beat on price.

Here in Arizona, we have cheap nopal and tuna. We could trade. This time of year we also have cheap iceberg lettuce.

Whenever I read these articles I always forget that most people don’t buy in bulk. I do most of my shopping exclusively at wholesale clubs and only use grocery stores for the things like spices or other ingredients we may not need a ton of.

Order dry goods by the 25 lb bag from nuts dot com or other suppliers. The effective price I pay is sooo much lower than what the average person spends. There’s some initial investment for pantry shelving, jars / bins for storage etc but it pays off very quickly.

I don't really buy in bulk, but for two adults total, I spend $70-$120/week at a major grocery store. Basically, clip their online coupons and shop the sales. So I'll pick up some goods in bulk, if it's something we use enough of and it is on sale that week. We also don't buy meat because my wife is a pescatarian, so most meals are vegetarian or fish.

It's not too difficult to keep costs down, but I can see if someone has a picky household, can't buy anything in bulk when it's on sale, or is bad at planning (ie, lots of impulse, junk, and prepared food purchases) how it can add up quickly.
