Massive Power Outage Hits So. Calif., Coachella Valley
Residents Lose Power In Triple-Digit Heat

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- What appears to be a massive power outage has hit a wide area of Southern California.

Callers to News Channel 3 reported a loss of power hitting around 3:45 p.m. in an area from Sun City in Palm Desert to the north all the way to La Quinta Cove.

At the same time, temperatures in the Palm Springs area hovered around 111-degrees.

Parts of Indio, including downtown, and areas toward the Salton Sea were also affected. The Indio Police Department confirms major power issues that at one time crippled their 911 system.

The California Highway Patrol and Riverside County Sheriff's Department are helping the city handle their emergency calls.

Some callers to our newsroom reported hearing a loud explosion near North Shore at the Salton Sea.

In La Quinta, the Wal Mart Supercenter has been evacuated after the electricity went out.

On Twitter, people from all over the southland are reporting power issues. Some in San Diego reported a loss of power and cell phone issues.

KGTV reports San Diego Gas & Electric crews are trying to determine the cause of the outage, which has affected various cities around the county, from the South Bay to downtown, to cities in the North County and into areas as far east as El Centro.

SDG&E representatives say they are looking into the issue and currently do not know what caused the outages.

Thanks boomer, that answers my question. Looks like tonight is going to suck, at least I have my bbq and Coleman stove to cook on.
Looks like at& the cell network is down here as well.

sucks for Indio--hope they don't have a show going on.

...and I thought Enron was no more--shouldn't SoCal brownouts be a thing of the past?

LA Times says
SDG&E said both its power supplies were compromised, though it is unclear exactly how. Lines from Arizona and from the north appeared to fail, the utility said.

I wonder what compromised means?

ya'll fucked

"An SDG&E official just stated, "We expect power to be out well into the night and into tomorrow in some areas."

A transmitter line between Arizona and California was severed, causing both major connections in the region, causing the outage. The extreme heat in some areas also may have caused some problems with the lines, according to SDG&E.

"Essentially we have two connections from the rest of the world: One of from the north and one is to the east. Both connections are severed," said the SDG&E official.
