The Great Post-It-Notes Debate

Today at work I had a disagreement with a co-worker about post-it-notes. I expressed my opinion that I thought post-it-notes were obsolete because you can type reminders in Outlook or use a variety of other programs without needlessly wasting paper. (This is one of those people that use post-it-notes all over their monitor.)

What amazed me is this person got really nasty with me and told me that, that was a stupid thing to say that everyone still uses post-it-notes. I replied that maybe if less people used post-it-notes then maybe we would save a lot more trees. Then they told me that as a friend they advise me not to say such stupid things or people would think I was an idiot but probably wouldn't say it to my face!

This really pissed me off so I told the person maybe if they weren't such an idiot to begin with then maybe we wouldn't be having this conversation. Then I added, of course I am saying that as a friend. I lost my temper and felt bad about it but why can't people disagree about something as stupid as post-it-notes without getting nasty about it.

Did you ever have a disagreement with a co-worker about something stupid in work and you felt they completely over reacted? OR... Did anyone ever tell you that they are telling you this as a FRIEND and then say something that made you want to punch them in the face for being a condescending, know-it-all asshat? (Sorry that was passive aggressive.)

i have to agree with your coworker. i'm been in IT over 15 years and still use a crap ton of PostItNotes.

plus it seems that it doesn't hurt the environment much either. you can use a stack of postItsNotes to make an awesome stick figure cartoon too

You still have to pay for the fuel to manufacture and ship them. Using a computer that's already running is almost free. I avoid paper as much as possible.

OK, stick figure cartoons are pretty cool. However, Post-it-Notes now a days are expensive. It seems like a waste of money to the company to use Post-it-Notes on stick figures and why do you need different colors? Do you color code your post it notes? Why couldn't you just buy a small notepad for less than a dollar to draw your stick figures?

The point is not even about the Post-it-notes. The question is why can't people disagree about something like adults and still be civil to each other? How do people even succeed in life without basic conversational skills?

I don't use the paper ones anymore. Windows 7 has a nice post-it notes app (Sticky Notes) built in, so my second monitor desktop is often half-covered with them.

You folks who are worried about our use of paper understand that trees are a renewable resource, right? And that we manage our forests by planting more trees in the place of the ones we harvest?

Old growth forests should be protected and responsibly managed because it's not easy to replace a 200 year old tree. But if we consider the forests where 20-30 year old trees are harvested and new trees planted in their place, how long do you think those lands would remain forested if there was suddenly no market for wood?

I've never gotten into anything like that with a co-worker. I don't use much paper myself but I do use post-it notes to put high-priority items on my desk so that I don't forget about them.

I still use post-its all the time. There are times when I need to take the post-its with me to someones desk, or if i'm jotting down serial numbers, or if the phone rings and my computer is off/locked or whatever. So no, post its are not obsolete.

Also, you and your friend are both fucking retards for getting into an argument over whether post-it notes are still relevant.
