Just rewatched The Great Escape and was wondering about escaped prisoners. If they are found wearing civilian clothes is it ok under international law to shoot them as spies?

I believe it is. IIRC, it's in the Geneva Convention.

Yep.

IIRC, Dennil posted a thread recently about the last of the escapees dying.

It was "legal".

But the gestapo knew they were escaped soldiers. They used the excuse to shoot them.

And yes, just about every thing you saw in that movie actually happened. The only real difference is they combined several real men into a handful of composite characters.

The stuff you saw a dozen guys doing was actually done by a hundred guys.

What do you mean, without regard? What do you know about rules of engagement?

Some of the main difference in a lot of these arguments is based on people trying to defend people opposed to people trying to exterminate people.

All I have to say.

Depends on you're side of the story like always I guess, but intent really is a factor IMHO.

Things normally are grey, not black and white.

As in to the victor go the spoils, most of the time.

I bet you didn't know that most if not all of the POW were canadians.
