The Golden Compass

I love the books-- I was amazingly excited to find out that they were going to turn The Golden Compass into a movie. I like Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter and the girl who plays Lyra looks like she could do a nice job in the role. 😀 I also hope they don't fsck up the movie!

The books were awesome.
I hope this story doesn't get screwed over like Eragon was.

Daniel Craig and Eva Green in the same movie again...better be good!
The music at the end of the trailer is from Gladiator, btw.

I saw the movie tonight. It as ok, but not quite as good as the trailers made it out to be. If you have a young female in your family, this is a good film because the main protagonist is a young girl who uses her wits to help save the day.

what he said.

I saw it today as well and simply loved it. Though it didnt finish where the book did* I suppose they are going to use that for the beginning of the second movie. Either way great job to all the actors and actresses, I barely noticed the time fly by.

Didn't that polar bear eat Jesus or something?

 no, but there are a LOT of Christians (and probably other monotheists) hacked off because, in the books, they basically discover God's omnipotence and benevolence are just a hoax set up by God, and in the end I believe God dies. Just read the wiki on it.

Myself, I don't care, I'm a Christian but this isn't the first time someone has produced something insulting my beliefs, and the world hasn't ended yet. I have no plans to see the movie, but you won't see me picketing the theater either.

...is this going to be like Million Dollar Baby? Superly biased and very confrontational about disbeliefs and also maybe extra contraversial.
thanx for tellin' me this, the.. previews had nothing about the first paragraph you wrote.

Meh, looked like it was appealing to children and more of a juvenile audience.

...and this much, except for the juvie part I agree with. it's a ..kidz film, made PG-13? what the hek hap'd to the rated G movies?

I saw it this afternoon with a friend. I'll have to say I was not very impressed but it wasn't bad. It feels like they cut too many scenes out of it. (Not to mention Daniel Craig is in it for a whole 3 minutes) There are too many characters and too many factions; witches, humans, gyppos, bears, the bad dudes and god knows who else. The plot is all over the place and hard to follow at times (5 minute bear fight was cool and the finale of it was awesome, but it really wasn't necessary at all), that is assuming you haven't read the books, which I haven't (but intend to!). The acting was top notch; Nicole Kidman was menacing and Dakota Richards (Lyra Belacqua) was excellent. The voice acting was excellent (Ian McKellen FTW) The animals all looked real and the CGI was perfect.

Overall I gave it a 6/10. Personally, I hope there is a director's cut with about 30 minutes more footage, as it really seems like there are missing scenes at times.

They cut out of the religious parts so not to piss off the American audience.

Which, according to those who saw it, steals the heart of the story and turns it from some anti-Christian type rant into just an anti-government rant.

Hah, the girl I saw it with is an only child and lives with her mother (father died earlier this year). Her mother is very religious so she warned my friend before the movie to be wary of the anti-christian views in it. direct quote from friend (as best as I can remember): "I just didn't have the heart to tell her that I already decided years ago that I didn't believe in any of it."

I told her she should go home after the movie and tell her mother that she's renounced her faith. Her mother would've killed me, heh.

I love the books and they are one of my favorite series' and close to my favorite if I even decided on one if not it, however I've got to say I'm wary of the movie. The book's anti-religious themes would not do well in America and if they cut parts out well... it's basically a castration but I'd like to watch it anyway. The anti-religious theme forms the backbone of the entire story arch.

edit: also I'm worried about the pace of the movie in comparison to the novel.

^ wait a few years, the older you get the more you tend to go back to faith.

When you start to lose grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles etc it helps to think that they have gone on to a better place.

Plus as you get older your life focus tends to change. You become less self focused and start to look at the big picture more and again it helps to think that there is a high power.

Not say you have to go to church and believe in what the bible says and all of that, but the idea that there is a higher power does tend to provide some comfort. Or at the least if gives you someone to pray to when you want something. "Dear God, that new red head at work, can you make her fall for me?" 😀

We saw the movie tonight and I thought the end was lacking. In fact, I didn't even know that was the end of the movie until the music start playing while the girl(lyra) talking to her friend on the air ship. The movie is good with acting and CGI but it seem the movie doesn't explains the plot well. If ProfJohn is right about they cutting a lot of scenes in American version, then it may be explain why.
I will definitely check the books out in library and too bad Daniel Craig doesn't have a lot of screen time in this.

when i saw the polar bear, i thought ok, when's he going to open a bottle of coca-cola and drink it?

the movie had an interesting premise. sorta like Ars Techa (primative machinery in a modern setting). but they didnt show enuf of it.

and the golden compass it self made no sense. she has to spin the dial to 3 places b4 she can see the past? kinda like Stargate dialing up other worlds?

Ok I just saw the Golden Compass with my wife yesterday. I have read the books my wife has not. We both agree the movie sucked horribly.

It was like they used a cliff notes version of the book that was missing pages and was printed out of order to make the movie. I felt like I was just having images thrown in front of me, the whole movie looked like it was just thrown together. Now I never expect a movie to be like the book but the Golden Compass looked like a cheap Sci-Fi Channel thrown together turd. I don?t even see how someone could even stay with the movie that had not read the books. Even the kids sitting next to us were bored and confused the whole time, why couldn?t they just made the movie a hour longer and built the characters and story up more?

Sad to see a good story trashed. :|
