That woman is an idiot.

If she is driving 24,000 miles a year and can cut her fuel expense in half then how does that make her an idiot? She could save $200 a month just in fuel costs assuming she was driving something that got 20 mpg.

err you really can't figure it out on your own? you were the one bidding against her right?

Back in the early 90s, my friend bought a 3 cyl CRX HF (think that's what it was called) that got ridiculously high gas mileage. It sounded like a hand mixer when it ran and had about as much power as one.

Look at my post further down comparing it to a Camry. It'd take 4 years to make it up with a $3000 camry. Which there are plenty of.

My fiancee and I got some pre-wedding photos taken over the weekend. The photogrpaher kept complaining about gas prices. I was thinking in my head, "you f*cking idiot".

He drives a Hummer H2.

Personally, I'm waiting for the headline

Geo Metro Tops List Of Most-Stolen Cars In U.S.

😀

I had a 3-cylinder Chevy Sprint (Metro-alike) at one point. Actually, for basic transportation in the city, it was OK by me. The bigger irony here is that gasoline in the U.S. is far cheaper than many other countries... they'd love to have $4/gallon gasoline in the U.K., for example.

Ok, so you can save some money on gas...but

you're still driving a metro. I dont even think I can fit inside a metro anymore; and I dont even want to imagine my car ride to work in that thing.

QFT. Motorcycle license and a motorbike = less money.

let us know how you do in the rain and with passengers and groceries.

I've taken a full 12" pizza home on my bike before. 12 packs of beer, groceries, you name it. Rain is no biggie, you will dry. Also, passengers are even better, you never have to drive anywhere thus saving more money.

You've got it all figured out, don't you? No, actually, you're just ignorant.
Doesn't matter, because in the end I'm right about where gas prices are headed, and what consequences will be the result.

$4 this summer. $5 in 2009. $6 before the end of the decade.

Following up an accusation of ignorance with the claim of "but I'm right" is hardly what I'd call logically valid.

I knew I got a good deal when my co-worker gave me her 87 tercel (got it just before gas went crazy). Especially when you consider my only other vehicle is a 2 ton 40 yr old 6.4 liter monster which requires premium and gets 10mpg on a good day.

You apparently missed where I posted this:

So she spent $7300 on a car....to be more economical?

Okay so with gas at $3.97/gallon, that amount of money could get her 51,464 miles in the Element.

Let's just round that to 51,500.

Now...how much will 51,500 miles cost in the Metro?

$5,111

So in order to save $2,189 over that mileage, she spent $7,300. With her commute, she probably puts that 51,500 on yearly. So it will take 3 and 1/3 years for her to start having any sort of return on her investment. In the meantime, she has another car payment, or is out the $7300 from somewhere.

How this makes sense I'm not sure.

Presumably she also gets to sell off the Element, lowering her insurance and netting enough gas money to drive the Metro to the moon and back. Although yeah, that was a lot to pay for a Metro.

Maybe. What if she didn't sell it?

But she probably could have sold it and gotten something like others suggested...do you really think she got $7300 for an Element which has been driving 51K+ miles per year?

Granted, it doesn't say what year the Element is. But if it's say 4 years old, that's over 200K miles.

I think her real best situation would be to find work closer or move closer to work. Or work from home if possible - maybe go to work 1 or 2 days a week.

WTF?!....How?? Were you going downhill in San Fransisco

Can the metro even climb one of those hills ? 😛

A friend of mine got a ticket for doing 85MPH up an 8% grade in a 3 cylinder Geo Metro. And somehow he lost the case because the cops were "pretty sure" it was him they clocked from the plane two exits before he got on the freeway.

My 40hp Beetle engine running on 3 cylinders climbed a pretty good incline at a non-comical pace 😛
