The GeForce GF9800 will be as quiet as a mouse

THE GRAPHICS CARD PAIR like to produce quiet cards these days.

And we hear in a suitably-muted whisper that Nvidia's G92 or NV55 as it it may also be known should be as quiet as a mouse.

Ever since the GeForceFX debacle, Nvidia has been producing ever quieter graphics cards, and this GeForce "9800" (truth to be told, 8900 moniker might be more appropriate) is another improvement over previous generation product.

As it turns out, in preliminary audio tests, the new card is more silent than not just 8800Ultra, but it is also less noisy than 8800GTX. It turns out that we are slowly approaching the era of silent monsters - computers that will emit less noise that your typical 15.4-inch laptop.

Of course, this all may seem too rosy, but as far as the board design - things are progressing nicely. GPU-wise, Charlie wrote that there are signs of problems with silicon that might have to be sorted with new spin, which could delay the release of the product. Users can only hope that Nvidia will fix all the issues on hand before they release the card.

Who knows, we might even see SLI with more than one monitor.

AMD's "Consumer Experience" group might be well advised to acquire one 8800GTX card and take an HD2900XT board plus whatever the name is for R680. Then, put them on passively cooled computers in a silent room, and start a 3D test. Compare the noise produced by 8800GTX to others.

Whoever was it who that said that noise was not important? Heprobably took a page from Dan Vivoli's book from the age of the GeForce FX fan-blower. Only thing is, will AMD dare to remake this video afterwards?? µ

seems like it had to happen eventually, nVidia numbering would duplicate old
ATI numbering and maybe vice versa.

5600, 6600, 7600, 8800 - 9800. the ATI 9800 was a real good card.

So are they actually calling it 9800? I would think they would use 9900 or something to distinguish it from the ATI one.

It won't be a problem considering the ATI Radeon 9800 was released in 2003 and has long been discontinued.

My brother still has 9800pro and is able to run cs source at 10x7 resolution and most of modern games with medium quality :D

Honestly, I care more about power consumption than noise. The blow of a computer's fans has never bothered me while I'm blowing crap up in BF2. As long as it's not a jet engine like my old PC, it's fine.

I think that article was an example of the inquirer 'milking it'.

They had no information on G92, so they had to write something about its cooling system.

It's always nice if high-end cards are silent, but really most people don't care so long as the dB rating doesn't cross a certain threshold.

One of those news that I would want to believe; ..but.. I personally believe that Inquirer-news are just fake untin proven otherwise. Well nobody believed that GF8800-cards would be silent until they came.

This computer is located at living room so silence is demanded. I was positively suprised when I bought my GF8800 GTS 640MB card and noticed that I don't have to change cooler; it's silent as it comes, but you can make that fan more quiet with Rivatuner (less speed) and overclock it and still temperatures are at acceptable limits.

What percentage is quiet for you? I have it 75-80% to keep temps from getting out of control (still goes up to about 88-89C...ambients are around 26-28C) but it is VERY noticeable over the 7 other fans I have in my case.

It IS quiet at around 60% but it runs way too hot at that speed.

That's weird :S ? I use 60%, have same clocks for 8800GTS as you have and card won't go over 80C (5x3DMark06)

Personally I hope they can make them a little smaller, high end cards just take so much room in your case nowadays. My 8800GTS covers almost 2 PCI slots. :(

Wow, I wish my card ran that cool. If I run the fan at 60%, it idles in the 70C+ range.

Thats really odd. When I run my core at 650 on my GTX it idles around 58-59 with fan @ 60% ambient is about 20-22C

If I crank the fan up to 100% temps only go down to about 53-54C though, needless to say, I just leave it at 60%

I hope so as the 8800 Ultra is quite loud during gaming.
