Well, apparently it didnt resonate with a lot of other people either, since she lost decisively. I am vehemently against Trump, but come on, his middle class tax cuts, flawed as they were, did more for me than any proposal Harris made would have done. And everyone received it, not just some sub-groiup that they deemed to have a specific need. And yes, I know, the cuts were biased toward the rich, and are expiring for the middle class, but people in general saw more money in their pocket, and that makes an impression.

Lost decisively by one of the smallest popular vote differences in 50 years with the winner winning <50% of all votes cast? With those numbers, I'd hardly call Trump's win "decisive".

I'm just barely into 6 figures and I'm very much working class. I'm fucking lucky working class but I gotta put up with much of the same bullshit I did when I worked at Walmart.

I am not going into specifics of my income, nor do I want to know yours. However the 3 lowest tax brackets, covering up to 200k for married couples (which I did not exceed) all decreased under Trump, so I dont see how you went from a refund to owing 4k unless your status changed drastically due to some other factor.

Edit: I mis-spoke. The lowest bracket remained the same, and the next 2 brackets decreased. The point is still the same though. I dont see how your tax could have gone up unless your status changed due to some other reason.

I did some more research. It must come down to the deductions. Trump's plan eliminated a lot of itemized deductions, while increasing the standard deduction. I use the standard deduction so not only did the rates go down, but I got a bigger deduction as well. I distinctly recall paying at least a couple of thousand a year less tax under the new law. OTOH, if one lost a lot of itemized deductions, then yes, you could end up paying more.

The media and celebrity-sphere is full of people like that. Usually they insist on a 'cultural' definition of working class, so that they can go on calling themselves that even as they become millionaires. I guess it _is_ complicated.

Related to the way "middle class" seems to carry entirely different connotations in the US as here. In the US it seems to mean 'normal', one of the 'ordinary folk', whereas here it's often a kind of accusation or sneer and carries an implication of being privileged and being out-of-touch.

I heard somewhere that the change in terminology in the US was quite deliberate and consciously promoted during the Cold War, for propagandistic and political purposes.
