The Game Box Outages

Message from LD:

Next week (starting this Friday), all of thegamebox.net/.org servers will be down for a week. This is so I can do updates, test new code, and deal with the unstable UT problems.

After these changes, I will have less CPU power then I did before. Why you might ask? Because I have to sort out the functions of each server to make later upgrades more effective.

Currently my master game server runs NFS (Network File System) to all of the other servers. It also shares my FTP and web files to the web server. The changes that will happen will be the following.

Move all webpage/mysql/stats logging/cron-jobs and such to the master game server. This will help deal with web files, and make it so my admins can work on the servers much better.

Gameserver number 2, will become the master server. But it only has 1 P-3 933mhz, so unlike the first server, it can't deal with nearly as many games/players.

Make the old web server with a new motherboard (and only the new motherboard) the secondary game server. This machine has a Celeron 400 @ 450 in it. As you can see the improvements will be nice in the future, but will slower for now.

We are going from (1.5Ghz +933Mhz + 950Mhz =) 3.383Ghz to (933Mhz + 950Mhz + 450Mhz =) 2.333Ghz. But this will make the master game server, and the secondary no longer dealing with file sharing, and able to be upgrade to dual P-3 CPU's.

When it comes back online, the changes should be nice.

nothing hardware wise, just going down for some software upgradeage, and I guess some other work. from what I understand its easier to take them all down instead of up and down for what LD is doing.
