last two to three times longer than traditional radial tires, and when it does wear out it can simply be retreaded.

Unfortunately, tire companies have about zero interest in this. Why produce a product people only need to buy once, when you can get money for a new set of rubbers every 3 or 4 years?

These will still wear out, thus forcing you to (still) buy new tires. What is the difference?
Oh and MICHELIN developed this. They make TIRES.

dumbass a tire company invented it.

They've designed it, they haven't mass-produced it yet for the public consumer, they have only one commercial use for it so far. brain_r has a point. One of the main contributing factors to the Great Depression was a surplus that towered over demand, due mainly to wealth distribution and products that only had to be bought once every decade or so.

notfred: the average drivers is much like the average computer owner. They don't know how it works, why it works, and they don't care either. As long as it get them from point A to point B and looks good (read: enlarge thier penis) it's good. I saw a guy that other day that was driving around normally on a tire that was dead flat. It had to have been making some noise as the rim was seperated from the road only by the sidewall that was folded in half.

I notice when a tire is a PSI off, I notice when something is acting odd on my PC. But the average owner has no f'ing clue.

I think I'm an average car owner, but i definitely notice if something doesn't sound right, or feels off/heavy. I don't know how to fix most things on my car, or if I do, I'd rather just ahve someone else do it, so that i can something productive with my time. oil changes and the like are dead simple, but for something like brakes or exhaust, I'm not goin to dick around with it.

what happens when you run over a large pothole at moderate/high speeds ? Air is forgiving... metal is not...

Do I need to bring up the fact that an uncle of mine called me to help him with a flat tire, and the reason it was flat was because he wore through the cords. He chose to only replace that one tire.

"...uses flexible polyurethane spokes..."

"felxible" and "plasticy" (technical term) not "rigid" and "metal" like bicycle spokes.

Story and PIC of TWEEL

What?s a future car without a future tire? Well, Michelin?s got us covered with a combination wheel and tire that doesn?t use air, making it impossible to go flat. The ?Tweel? uses flexible polyurethane spokes and promises to last two to three times longer than traditional radial tires, and when it does wear out it can simply be retreaded.

And it will only cost you 8-10X the amount of a regular tire..

You mean tire companies like MICHELIN?

*gasp* Your powers of observation are simply amazing! Now go sit tight and think this is anything more than a tech demo, and not a song and dance by Michelin to get some good poress.

You're not a very smart person, are you?

First you claim tire companies have 'zero interest', and obviously they do if they invested money in the R&D of it, and actually announced the product. And if they've announced it, they've probably patented it as well... and incase you didn't know, whether they take advantage of the patent/technology or not, in several years it'll become public domain, and others will be able to use the technology.

You conspiracy theorists are pathetic... you probably believe in such crap that the pharmaceutical companies are withholding the cure for cancer because they make more money on the treatment. But if you would actually exercise your brain for a few mins and think of things around you, you'll see many things that disprove this conspiracy of yours (ie rechargeable batteries).

Companies invest millions of dollars into concept vehicles all the time. Those designs never go anywhere, but they attract attention. You might know this, but apparently you are not a very smart person either. Check out this right here for a nice waste of millions of dollars:

LINK!

Maybe Michelins tire will end up on come service vehicle, but you think they would want to cannabalize their entire consumer business by making people buy one set of Tweels at an affordable price???

Also, by patenting tech like this, it ensures that no other company can wreck the tire market for the next 17 years.

Silly you, try working in a pharmacy for a few years. If you think pharmaceutical companies are not ripping people off for everything they can in the American market, you are the idiot. And any company with a cure for cancer would bring it to market ASAP because they could set their own pricing for it and still get the money.

Concept vehicles are created to see if there is a market for that particular STYLE. They're not going to produce $5billion worth of vehicles, if they're not going to sell.

Ok, maybe it's because i'm a genius that i was able to think of this... but maybe they would set the price higher?!

Silly you, try working in a pharmacy for a few years. If you think pharmaceutical companies are not ripping people off for everything they can in the American market, you are the idiot.

Well first... it takes hundreds of millions to develop these treatments... and then because of the American market, they need to take into account the possibility of liability suits. And omg, i know this is a strange concept, but they're allowed to make a profit... and this may be news to you, but you can INVEST in these companies if you think they're all about money, and have your voice in the decisions.

And any company with a cure for cancer would bring it to market ASAP because they could set their own pricing for it and still get the money.

And why can't Michelline do this?

This is very true and i agree entirely with what you say. I have seen so many cars just even going to the local gorcery store that have severly underinflated tires, and the wear pattern shows it. I sometimes wonder how people don't notice it when driving on the freeway, at speeds of 60mph and more!

I checked the tire pressure in my Jeep the other day, was around 12-13 psi in all 4 tires. I bumped it back up to 21-22 where it belongs. 🙂 The joys of tires that are way too big.. hahaha.
