Back in the 1980's, in his novel Schizmatrix, Bruce Sterling described the concept of people who have "faded", or who had died, but were too "polite" to admit to society that they have. So they leave behind a network of messages and other assorted cues to present to the world the illusion that they are still alive and kicking.

Wow, this is really interesting, I didn't think of this yet.
BTW.....
"After an hour of sifting through random profiles, I eventually found that friend of mine. As it turns out, she died in a car accident two years ago. She fell asleep at the wheel while driving home from work late one night. She was 19 at the time, but her profile states that she is currently 21. Her picture smiles back defiantly. "

of course in 2 years there will be a completely different fad site that everyone has migrated to. i know a lot of people who already look down on anyone who is on myspace.

I don't think the numbers will be quite that high. The mortality rate figures in old people too, right? Myspace and other social networking websites are full young adults.

i'm assuming the figure mentioned in the article accounts for all deaths in the united states regardless of age. you are right in that the majority of myspace users are in their twenties, but given a few more years, the age distribution will be more even. by then, myspace will be a pretty scary place to visit.
