The future of console gaming..

If the future of console gaming becomes cloud or streaming based like PS Now is, then forget it- my ISP has bandwidth cap restrictions that wouldn't allow me to play them for very long unless I pay a lot than what I'm already paying and that's not going to happen.

I recently got back into console gaming because I missed playing games like NHL and Madden and such which aren't available on PC.

I'm calling it now and I'm ready to eat my hat if I'm wrong. VR is going to be another flash in the pan, just like 3DTV. I give it three years tops, and even that feels far too generous.

I thought that at first until that HTC set. That showed me VR is here to stay.

VR is a logical endpoint to where mobile and desktops have gone. You combine the high PPI screens mobile created with the massive GPU power of desktops and suddenly a setup with three or six monitors looks primitive for immersivenes. Unlike 3D, VR actually pushes the tech forward.

It is going to start with the PC master race and spill into mobiles. By the time VR has momentum the consoles will need replacing, and they will be replaced with VR consoles with included headsets.

I remember the old VR at the arcades back in the 90's. Despite the limitations, it was very immersive for it's time compared to what was available at home. I think VR today will be add a lot to that immersive feeling and just moving your head even a little side to side or up and down is a huge benefit over trying to do that on a gamepad while you're running around. You can sit in a driver's seat and glance to a side mirror much more efficiently making them actually useful for a change or to glance up at a window as you enter a building to see if someone is about to snipe you. Using your head to look around is also more precise and natural compared to using your thumbs. It appears that at least the Vive will offer a little bit of peripheral as well. Anything that feels more natural to a player will gain quick acceptance.

3Dtv had several issues from ghosting to non compatibilities. Most games just flat out sucked in 3D. Only a small few actually looked very good such as Trine 2 or Madness Returns and when it did work, it was a nice improvement in having depth compared to 2D. Most games didn't support native 3D and PS3 had limitations with 3D due to hardware so not everything had much if any depth at all.

future is hologram gaming.
