My very first computer, or to be specific, the chip just went to Hardware Heaven.

Yes, pray tell, my beloved Cyrix P166+ that has served me through the last 5 years....just went POOF!

Heat was undoubtably the culprit! Yes, the bastard known far and wide as HEAT!

I'll get you HEAT! No matter how long it takes....no matter the expense of heatsinks and fans....or shipping for that matter.:p

Yo' ASS is mine! It might be a cold day in Hell, but I'm gonna get you!:l

If you really want to get rid of HEAT,the first thing to do is get rid or RC5,that's the number 1 cause of HEAT.

Budman,

RC5 is the number one cause of heat? Couldn't tell that by the dozen or so OVERCLOCKED systems all around me right now that are running it.

Forget that! If it don't crack blocks , it don't belong in my house!

I've got a Pentium 133 in there until after the wake....

Budman,

The CPU's on my systems are averaging less than 40c. Why would I waste time installing some glom-on cooling software when I'm already at about half of maximum spec?

Because it would run at 30degrees & heat would be lower.

Isnt Heat what we are talking about?

I wasnt talking about Stability or Specs, the subject here is HEAT.

Russ,

I am not trying to sound like an a$$ or something similar here.

I have nothing against people running RC5,but the subject here being talked about is that Tominator said his cpu died and that it was Heat related.

I just looked at his SIG & found that he was running RC5,
Having run RC5 for a month on my machine and noticing some extra heat being generated I told him that turning off RC5 might help.

Don't you agree Russ that Running RC5 generates more Heat than not running it?

You are on thin ice budman....what happens when you get tired of watching rain sit in your system tray and you want to actually do something on your computer?

Then i let My Athlon Artic Circle do it's work.;)

Besides surfing the net & sending emails & doing some frontpage work rarely taxes the cpu 100% like RC5 does.

I've been running RC5 for the Anandtech Team for 4 years! Since it's inception in any case, and it might be closer to 5 years.

I think I had a bum fan connector and I'm not sure the Cyrix is fried at all!

I have and paid for 'Waterfall.' It does decrese CPU temps, but I choose to be a member of the AnandTech RC5 Cracking Team!

I will sacrifice a few degrees of heat, even the 'Life' of my Cpus to support the Team. What's a few degrees amoung Friends?:D

Maybe that little Cyrix will arise! Reborn to crack more blocks! What better all-encompassing goal? Reborn as it were....It will rise above the ashes of defeat....oh but for just one more block before the final demise!

Mmm. Call me a whimp but...between Rain and RC5, I chose Rain, particularly since I like my comp to be able to go on standby when I'm not sitting in front of it. ;)

mmmm, I dont think it was rc5 that made the cyrix go "poof", cyrix's are known for the heat they gernerate. In fact they have been known to catch on fier, w/heatsink and fan. i do agree that rc5 generates heat because it uses 100% of the CPU, but im not spending $$ to for some software that cools it off and makes you sacrifice precious cpu cycles that can be used for rc5.

All I am saying is that even if you fan dies while you are away and rain or cpuidle or waterfall is running you could have saved the cpu in a win98 environment.

On the other hand if your fan dies & you're running RC5 then you can say bye bye to your cpu very fast.:(

Well i have a Ppro 180 that has no CPU fan (has a heatsink, and a case fan), and it cracks rc5 all day and night w/no heat probs
And i rather the pro burn up for the team then run something that dosnt crack rc5.

Well....! I'll just take the chance!:)

Cracking on a P133, a PII 233 OCd to 300, and 2, count'em, 2 Celery 366@550s on a BP6.

I would never pin 'Wimp' on you, but to be amoung the Elite and not be cracking blocks is...well..it's Blasphemy!

Mrfluffy,

If you or anybody else that needs them i have 2=486dx2-66,1=486dx2-50, and 1 amd x5-133 adw. ALL AMD chips for the cause.

I have no boards for them & if you want them they are yours:)

the 133 should be able to do 160 easy:) if your board can handle it.

email or ICQ me if you want them.
