I'm about 15 minutes in. Please tell me that at some point this movie starts to make sense?

It's a movie you will either love or hate. There is no real hardened plot, just a bunch of imagery that elicits an emotional response. You gotta admit, some of those images are absolutely stunning.

I like it so far, it just seems too random.

I saw the previews and expected a movie about some dude who actually found the Tree of Life and lived forever. What I got was three random plot lines, none of which made any real sense, and two of which were only imagined. On top of that, I got a bunch of people telling me that "I just didn't get it", yet somehow, no one was able to explain any of it.

Yeah, some of the visuals where pretty. The story was surreal. The guy is reading the story his girl wrote and it reflects his struggles in real life in searching for a cure as well as dreaming/day dreaming. It goes back and forth between that fantasy and real life. In the end he was left with finishing the story because she could only write up to the present. The tree is her and he is eating it for nourishment which is another way of visually showing how much he is attached to her in real life. They depend on one another and the trees death in the dream / story represents her death in real life. Eating someone else is an act seen in this context of complete love. It is an attempt to become one with another person something beyond simultaneous orgasms. I think the end visuals represented an epiphany about life and moving on past her death allowing her body to nurish the life of another tree represented by the planting of the seed. The journey depicted in the nice visual sequences through space represents his struggle to find a cure and emotional search for a meaning to it all.

Over all it was an okay film but not very re-watchable, imo.

Well, it's over.

I think I get it, but I wasn't terribly blown away. I feel as if the movie had so much more potential, I just don't know how.

I was so-so on this. I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. I saw it in the theaters because my roommate wanted to see it. If I knew beforehand how I felt about it, I probably wouldn't have gone to see it.

I'll explain part of it I guess:

the first story (conquistador) is fictional in the world of The Fountain. It is the story his wife is writing, and after her passing, he writes the last chapter.
the second story is fully realized, and he discovered the tree of life quite a while ago. That is his wife's inspiration for the story, and imaged the lady (queen?) after herself, and the conquistador after Tom. she links her fictionalized story to modern day by referring to him as 'my conquistador'. he found it, and is applying the sap to the chimps with brain tumors. he is testing the potential of the sap, to make a serum to hopefully apply to his wife, but alas doesn't figure it out in time. he does apply it to himself however.
the third story, the one in the future, is also real in the universe of the movie. He applied the tree of life to himself. the tree he has such a connection with in the 'bubble', is the tree he planted on Izzy's grave. through his own power, he discovers/believes he must sacrifice himself.

alas, this is only one take on the story, and one I created myself. you could have a different explanation for the third (future) story, but to me, it doesn't hold the same power and meaning if it is any different from how I explained.
way I see it, he lived that entire time, due to applying the tree serum to himself, and had the goal to reach the nebula, due to the story behind the tree. He figured, if the tree is real, the stories behind the tree and the civilization must too be real. so he lived until he could reach the nebula, and sacrificed himself.

its a very powerful story about love and devotion.

that potential can be uncovered through drugs. ;)

That's not a bad idea.

best part is Arnof didn't have enough of a budget to use CGI ... so the flying through nebula's scenes are microscopic video of chemical reactions. How sweet is that?

I really loved the movie... sorry America but just because a movie actually makes you think, does not make it a horrible movie. It was extremely thought provoking. I probably spent a good two hours discussing it the night I saw it... and countless hours since then. mostly trying to give a clue to people too busy to actually take the time and WATCH the movie. The basic premise really isn't that difficult... just freaking pay attention.

some of the critics have made mention of that very fact too.. that its just too much for the American audience to take. sad. thankfully there are a few of us strong enough to handle something as brilliant as this movie. :)

It received a standing ovation at European Film Festivals after American critics snubbed it...

I heard that the reason he didn't choose CGI was that he didn't think CGI would stand the test of time (since as technology gets more advanced, the CGI now would look like crap in a few years).

The Fountain was originally scheduled for a late 2005 release but was delayed due to Rachel Weisz's pregnancy, and did not make a showing at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.[60] The film finally held its world premiere at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2006.[61] While several critics booed the film at the festival's press screening, The Fountain received a 10-minute standing ovation at the public screening the following evening.[11]
