The Forest

Looks pretty awesome. Looks like it's still in Alpha; any expected release date?

I've had my eye on this one for a while!

From Dec. 11,

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to post a quick update on our release plan. We've been aiming for an end of year alpha release, but as Christmas approaches we’re realizing there’s still a lot of work left to do.

Our new target date for the alpha release on steam is early 2014. We’ll try and open pre-orders before then and also post some new screenshots and videos soon.

We've been adding a lot of features to the game and also improving the visuals and so we feel it’s going to be worth the extra wait.

Thanks everyone for your continued support and messages. You guys have all been awesome and we really appreciate all the help in spreading the word about our game!

that game looks hella awesome, i love the style and the graphics and gameplay look great. the setting and atmosphere should make for am amazing experience!

It is early access.

I'll be waiting for this one to be finished. A quick look at the forums shows that you can't even save your game yet.

Its fun but wait it out, its very alpha, the concept is there and already better than dayz if u dont like pvp. Also its in PRE ALPHA.

Too bad they didn't use a better graphics engine, a game like this screams for something like Frostbite 3 or something. But if this game is anything like Paranormal then it will never see a finished product, they'll just take your money and get tired of messing with it apparently.

Yea...it's getting to the point where TOO many games are coming up as alphas, etc. I think it is going to have a negative affect overall soon.

I don't see how its any different from developers showing screenshots from a game in development. You don't HAVE to buy a pre-alpha.

What makes you think the game would look so much better running on Frostbite 3?

I think too much importance is placed on the engine nowadays. I mean would the game look inherantly different running Frostbite 3? I would think it has more to do with the assets themselves and the choices the developer make rather than the engine its running on. Maybe some post processing shaders would look slightly different but im sure it can all be tweaked to look close to the same.

I think there are too many games coming out in the fps survival genre on top of early access. Seems like there is a new fps survival once a week with a slight variation on the setting. Be more creative devs!

Imagine this game with the DayZ gameplay. Makes me think Bohemia are a bunch of clowns.

Kinda strange that the guy couldn't pick up or use that tent on the beach. I wonder how much of story will be in the game. I'm curious as who the boat and tent belonged to. He must have been a bad mofo, since his campground was filled with native and shark corpses! Its too bad they can't remake that Lost game with the open world survival game play thats so popular now. Killing natives or octopus head monsters isn't really mind thing, but I wouldn't mind the survival and exploration aspect of this game.

I ended up buying it, since every gameplay I have seen kinda annoyed me because no one built torches or spears. Turns out that stuff isn't in the game yet. Well, there is a weak spear, but you can't craft it, you have to find it near a pond. And you can only fish with it, not kill other animals or natives. Anyways, while its fairly limited, I already like the core mechanics more than DayZ. It doesn't seem like you can eat cooked meat/fish, so I don't know how long one can expect to play. I played for about an hour, and I don't think you are meant to play for more than that at the moment. I was killing them easily enough, but I think the game wanted me in the cave, cause there were 5 guys attacking me at once. Then at about the hour mark, there was another 5 or so guys attacking me when I was building my fort, and they two hit killed me. bs, but whatever! 😛 Just need to be able to craft some rudimentary weapons, like a knife and bow, ability to eat cooked meat, craft a torch, and I'm set.

EDIT: I did some testing, and there actually are edges to the map. When you get to a certain point text comes up saying its not done yet. There seem to be natives all over. I crossed two rivers and went up a mountain, and there was a native camp in the middle of nowhere. Anyways, I kept going, and ended up on a beach with a boat. This was confusing, since I started on the cliff, and in the Rhinocrunch video he got to the same place from the same spawn going a different direction. At around the 30 min mark I got bum rushed again by 5+ natives. I just jumped off a cliff, died, but then ended up in the cave again.

I think I am done until they either add a better weapon (both axes cannot take down 5+ enemies at the same time), or fix the saving. Lot of potential though.

It looks really interesting, but I refuse to be part of the "buy the Alpha, and MAYBE I'll finish the game... later... if I remember" trend.
