It would be interesting to read a followup of this story after scientists publish the results of that analysis. It does make you wonder if it's natural phenomena or if it's some kind of man-made pollution.

Bah, it's literally last month's news, it happened in February and has since broken up if you had cared to read the article. It's also most likely a biological cause.

We invest heavily in our space program..
 
It is caused by cultural eutrophication. There is a lot of nutrient rich fertilizers that run into the missisipi river. These cause algal blooms. due to the abundance of a new food source(the algae) the bacteria population skyrockets. The metabolic activity of the huge populations of bacteria removes lots of oxygen from the water(as well as other toxic byproducts) thus everything dies.
