I believe it was Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman

I still think this is one of the greatest albums of all time.
 

My first album (I think) was a recording of a Superman story that my dad bought for me at a discount shop. The first CD I bought on my own was SP's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

I have no idea about the first single (I had dozens as a kid), but the first album was "Escape" by Journey. Oh, the pain!!!
