The first 10 things you put in your computer?

Excluding the OS, Drivers, Updates, etc what are the first 10 programs/utilities that you install into a brand new/formatted rig? You may group stuff as 1 item if they all do generally the same things like codecs for example.

Mine in no particular order:

1. Browsers
2. Antivirus/Antispam
3. Office
4. Winamp & other audio utilities
5. Media players & other video utilities
6. Compression/Extraction Utilities
7. Codecs
8. Messengers(AIM/MSN/etc)
9. Photoshop
10. Azureus

This is my attempt to discover interesting programs that I should be installing that I've never known about. 😉

Motherboard standoffs, power supply, motherboard with CPU already mounted...

oh, you mean LOADED?

uh....

OS
Firefox
Office

The rest depends on what I'm using it for.

A communication server gets trillian, ABC, DYNDNS client, antivirus, power management software, etc

A home work PC will get DIVX drivers, games, Visual Studio, Acrobat, Photoshop, Nero etc

A work pc will get Visual studio, Visio, Nero, HTML-Kit, CutePDF, etc

In order (since I have an HP)

!) remove HP's crap
2) connect the internet
3) get Zonealarm and Anti-Vir
4) Get windows updates
5) Install Folding at home

Thats about it other than installing games. Leave it run 24/7 and its all good.

Anti-virus/firewall
AIM + DeadAIM
Firefox
Office
Winamp

+ other stuff, but that usually gets installed only once I need it again.

Antivirus
Anti spyware
Browser
E-mail client
DVD codec

Driver Cleaner Pro
Office 2000

Motherboard
CPU+heatsink
RAM sticks (dual channel)
DVD-RW drive
DVD-Rom drive
Video card
SATA Hard drive (for OS + storage)
IDE Hard drive (for storage)
Fans throughout the case

Come on, shouldn't you put components in your computer case before you start installing software? 😛

And then software

Firefox (before ANYTHING ELSE)
Latest drivers+updates for hardware/OS
Install Office
Install WinRar
All media codecs + Media Player Classic (audio/video playback)
VLC, Foobar2000 (additional audio/video playback)

Azureus
Antivirus + Antispyware software
Instant messengers

1. Firefox
2. Antivir
3. Kerio Firewall
4. Drivers and Windows update
5. Trillian
6. Media codecs + Media Player Classic
7. EVE Online
8. Nero
9. Azureus
10. WinRAR

For me it's normally like
1)Updates
2)Masses of games

I got sick of having to reinstall everything after a few months (like 4ish--I tend to murder windows rather well) so I just made an image.

OS
Fire Fox
SpyBot search and destroy
3D studio max
Paint Shop Pro
Visual studio C++
CPU-Z
Dev C++
JVM
Net Beans

How I reformat:

1) Install Windows
2) Install SP2, restart
3) Install Mobo drivers, restart
4) Graphics card, mouse, keyboard, antivirus, restart
5) Firefox, IE's popup blocker, windowsupdate.com while updating Norton
6) Update additional norton, install AIM, Office, restart
7) Quicktime/itunes, Winzip, Rhapsody, Office update, Nero
8) Winrar, games
9) Install as you go (usually Paint SHop Pro, then Photoshop, Dreamweaver, blah blah)

I dropped a screwdriver in one of mine right after installing my new mobo, which immediately became my old mobo.

I'm not sure I'd recommend that as the first thing to put into your computer after you assemble it, though.

And, in all seriousness, I have a network-distributed HA/HT package which allows me to control all my A/V and home automation functions for any zone from any PC [or pda phone or tablet] using my custom UI. The client Interface Viewer is the first thing I install, and must be on every PC in my house. [i have 5 and counting]

1. Firefox
2. Trillian
3. Office+Outlook
4. Winamp
5. Winrar
6. Nero
7. Limewire
8. Bitcomet
9. ACDSee
10. Photoshop
