That sucks for that guy, but I have never been under any illusions that my job is safe at any level. I keep a box of things under my desk (coffee mugs, some papers, personal effects, etc.) that I can grab in the event I'm shown the door, which I know could happen any day. Such is life.

pardon the obvious, but how do you know this is the justification?

"but a month later the guy was fired because the boss found someone with higher qualifications..."

A co-worker recently won an award for customer service (his dept's choice) but a month later the guy was fired because the boss found someone with higher qualifications...

that must have been a great morale boost for the department

If you have a marketable skill you will succeed, even if one company fires you. It's the nature of capitalism.

It's normal to be fired if you don't meet the expectations of your boss.

Now-a-days it appears people are being fired even if they do a great job!

The boss sounded giddy too :'(

So you best watch yo back -- even if you're not a fuck-up you can still get fired XD

There has to be more to this story, but if it is true, you should probably start looking as you don't want to work for a company like that very long.

This. It's great you have a job right now, but companies like this are total shit. Get out as quickly as you can.

I think the boss's though process was, "Oh shit, I can replace this college student with someone with a master's degree! God bless high unemployment!"
stupid, I know
Sounds like a terrible boss. The people who are most likely to quit the job are the people who can quit their job. Immigrants fresh off the boat will stay at a place like McDonalds for years at a time. Someone with a degree who desperately needs a job will work there for the shortest time possible.
If you're talking about a job that can effectively be done by a college student, then you can expect the dude with the master's degree to be gone as soon as the recession is over.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with that attitude...I've NEVER left any personal property at the job that would bother me to walk away from...

Yeah, except today marketable skills don't count for squat. Especially when 50 other equally skilled people are vying for the same job. They say you should get used to hearing "no." I say you're lucky if you get a no. Most of the time you never hear back from them period.

If the company wants a certain revenue profit; some are willing to kill the R&D to make the bottom line look better.

That allows upper management to justify their bonuses and raises - they met revenue/profit targets for the current year. Maybe next year they will have to do this same cutting again if the economy does not pick up.

Companies don't give a shit about morale as they know that jobs are hard to come by so they will work your ass off. Everyone knows this! :hmm:

I miss my work belt and axe :^( I could have gotten the stuff any time I guess, but I didn't feel like it.

That sucks, I wouldn't go back for personal stuff either. I'm also in the "box under my desk" club. I don't put pictures on my desk, or anything in the drawers. I just have my bag that I bring in each day.

I've been laid off a couple of times so I've learned that it's better to just leave the workplace asap rather than stewing about what just happened while gathering your shit.
