Okay, for 99% of you, this post will make no sense. For the 1% that have any experience with POS systems and retail sales, you might laugh.

My Boss is giving me two days to order a Micros 3700 point of sale register and have it working with a fully functional menu and pricing scheme. I've never touched these registers in my life.

And he said that he probably should have looked into this a couple weeks ago. GEE YA THINK?????

I know nothing about your cash register thing, but I'm familiar with people who are delusionally optimistic.

Good freakin' luck. I work for a midsized restaurant chain, and one of the members of our IT department pretty much focuses on setting up and maintaining our Micros and Aloha systems. Like, that's her whole job. 2 days? Does your boss think you just plug it in, type in a few things and you're good to go?

Hehehe, yep pretty much. Funny thing is - it takes a month to actually order these things and have them shipped to you. Oops!

So, for a quick fix, I've arranged a teleconference with a franchisee of the same company and POS systems that we are using to allow us to PCanywhere into their systems and look at their front end and back end stuff.

Not the same as having a terminal right in front of you, but the best that I could do in a couple days time.

This was even better than when they gave me a week to network, purchase and install a phone system, and set up computers in brand new building with 12 offices :disgust:

And for your next trick, I suppose he wants you to pass a fully inflated life raft out your anus.

What is it with supervisors who expect IT people to be miracle workers.

Not really related to your post, but I find POS and inventory control systems REALLY REALLY interesting. For chains like Meijer and Kroger, I think it's the coolest thing how when you buy something, their inventory servers count that as a depleted item and know that they'll need to order that many more next time an order is placed.

What kind of education did you go through? Also, do you like your job? I think the best engineering job I can imagine is a high-up logistics engineer for UPS who gets to work with those Diad devices. Sweet!

Uhhhh....the school of "Get this to work or your fired" :)

And yes...it is interesting. WHEN IT WORKS! :D

The system we are putting in on another franchise we own is quite cool. Once again...when it works.
