Wow. I turned it on today, and the fan was making this REALLY LOUD grinding noise. I tried running speedfan, which someone reccommended to me, but as always, the program froze my computer. I turned the computer back on, and the fan wouldn't start at all. Is it safe to be running my computer? It's a P4 1.9ghz.see this thread for more info.

Shut it down now and replace it........ your lucky you dont have an athlon, no thingy to slow the cpu down or shut it down if it gets too hot.

I'm going to bring it into the place that I got it at tomorrow so they can replace the fan. I'm not sure if the fan isn't running now or if it is just really quiet. Actually, I can hear it a little.

Is this a cpu fan or a case fan? I haven't seen anything to know that this is the cpu fan, in that situation you shouldn't be running it. If it's the case fan, just pull the side off and it will be alright to run it for now until the case fan is replaced.

Actually the question is: Is it the CPU fan, a CASE fan, or the POWER SUPPLY fan. If it's the power supply or CPU fan, shut down now and get it replaced. If it's just a case fan, go buy a new one.

You're right, wasn't even thinking about the power supply fan... that could be potentially harmful to the computer, as well.

Maybe he already powered down and can't access this, anyway... 😛

I don't know which fan it is. Since I didn't build the computer myself, I don't know if it has a case fan. I don't think it does. I'm fairly sure that it is the CPU fan, but I don't know how to tell without opening the case. I'm at school now, so I can't do anythingwith my computernow, but it IS off right now. when it was on earlier today when the fan died, the CPU temperature was still only around 50 degrees C, which is normal for my computer. Maybe it's the PSU fan in that case.

It sounds like the fan is running now, so I don't know what happened. Should I still bring the computer in to get fixed tomorrow?

YES! Its not worth a dead CPU. Even if it does seem to be running fine now, it could quit again at any time.
