A while ago I posted about my new build and some errors a got that resulted in needing a new hard drive. Well, I got one, a WD caviar blue, got it installed, everything on it, ect. The machine has been on less than 12 hours and bam, restarts, windows message about a serious error. I really want to figure out what's causing the error. There's a chance it's an overheating issue, so I'm going to check the temps with my temp gun later. I'd like to check the hardware too, but I don't have any diagnostic software at my disposal. Is there anywhere I can get some, preferably for free, that will do a thorough test on the memory, motherboard, and graphics card?

Avoid using the temp gun to measure the CPU temperature. You can only get the temperature of the heatsink, not the actual CPU temp. If the thermal grease is of bad quality or insufficient, it is likely that CPU will be hot but the heatsink will be cold, due to lack of the heat transfer from the CPU. You'd better use internal CPU sensors (monitored by software, like SpeedFan).
 
I was planning on using the temp gun for the Mobo temp. However my bios has a setting where it can tell that temp, so I didn't need to. Right now my CPU is at 46C/114F and the mother board is at 44C/111F. Those temps sound hot to me and the machine just did it's shut down BS a few minutes ago. I'm not sure what the proper temp for an AMD Phenom X4 is though. Are those hot or right in range?
 
The temps don't sound very hot to me at all. My overclocked C2D 2.8ghz idles at around 56c/133f and my motherboard chipset is typically around 50c. I don't have any heat-related issues.
 
Thanks. Well that rules out running too hot and the hard drive. I've tested the memory too and that comes up fine. It's a fresh install on the OS, so that won't be the issue. Is there a free diagnostic software out there to test the board and CPU. Those are the only parts left and I'd hate to RMA both of them if I don't need to. That board is a bitch to get out. I'm gonna look for a heat monitor I can use while the machine is actually in use instead of idling in BIOS maybe I'll luck out and it'll be a heat issue after all.

if that's ur idle temp, unless ur ambient is 37C, those temps are pretty hot. AMD chips run at a much lower temperature compared to Intel chips. My overclocked phenom idles at 21-24C and the core 2 duo I use to have idles at 37-40C at stock speed.

when do you experience the error? do u get it when you are running heavy programs or get it while you are not doing anything?

my old laptop w/ a temp problem does exact same thing, so my suggestion is if you have any thermal paste around (if not, $6 is not a bad investment), try reseating the hsf and see if you get any improvement.
 
I get it at random times. The first couple times I got it was while I was playing Sims 2 with AIM and a Firefox window in the background. I've also had it do it when I was away from the computer, while at work or just out of the room. I don't remember what was going on while I was at work, but when it did it last I had Sims 2 minimized in the background, a couple IM windows open and a couple Firefox windows up. I'd left the room and was out of it for about 10-15 minutes, when I came back the system had rebooted. The system is running louder than it did before I rebuilt it, fan-wise, I mean if that helps any.
I'll pick up some thermal paste while I'm out shopping tomorrow. Is there any brand or type that's better than others? I've never bought that before.

listen to the fans, try to locate whether it's the cpu fan or system fan that's getting louder, if it's cpu fan then that's likely the source of the problem.

as for thermal paste, get tuniq tx-2 ($6ish), really cheap shit but works really well. try to stay away from the silver based ones (arctic silver 5) unless you are real careful when you are applying, as they are electrically conductive and can kill ur cpu/motherboard if you over-apply or let any drip onto the motherboard.
 
After many tests, I determined that the issue with my computer was the processor overheating. When I removed the heat sink from the CPU I pretty much confirmed that was the issue, there was almost no paste on the heat sink or CPU. I guess it cooked off. I got new, better paste, carefully put it on then booted up the machine. I've had it on for about a half hour, then rebooted it to test the temps in the BIOS. The temps are pretty much unchanged. How soon should I see some difference in temperature?
