The only way right now is to go into the bios and you will see the setting right below the SPD tag. When you have it set to SPD, then timings will change automatically as you adjust the FSB

Whew - what a read! Need a little help guys. How do I use the HPT UIDE1 controller with a single HDD as my boot drive? I guess what I need to know is the boot sequence (SCSI, HDD0 or HDD1), and if I select SCSI/Highpoint or Highpoint/SCSI at the top of the page, and if there is anything that I have to do under the HPT bios setup utility. Here's what's funny - my computer won't go past ESCD update, update success (it just freezes after that) - unless I have the Win XP disc in my CDROM drive and make it my first bootable drive. My XP installation went great, and I have all the drivers loaded - no question marks under any hardware profiles. After the installation, I went into bios to change the boot sequence from CDROM to the HDD but it would stop at "update success." Here's the weird part - if I leave the CDROM as the boot drive and leave the XP disc in it, it boots flawlessly into XP every single time. I'd like to have my single HDD on the HPT controller because I want to use IDE 1 & 2 for my CDROM and CD-RW drives as masters. I have tried every boot sequence in bios - including enabled and auto for the HPT controller. It's so weird that the drive is working well in XP on UIDE1 controller, but that it won't boot from it. I'm totally stumped, and don't want to always keep my XP disc in the CDROM drive just to boot. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Here are a few specifics, let me know if you need more:

4/24 bios
XP Pro
HDD on UIDE1 (Jumpered to master)
DVD on IDE1 (master)
CD-RW on IDE2 (master)
1.8a @ 2.4 @ default vcore (has topped out at 42c so far)
Takes several seconds for "bios setting utility, scan devices, please wait" to do its thing during boot but this may be normal for all I know.

DoobieOnline Did you go into the Highpoint Bios Configuration Utility and select your Hard drive as a boot disk?
For the boot sequence the SCSI should be before HDD0 and HDD1 and I have Highpoint/SCSI selected.

Hey terminalmind, yeah I tried all that and no joy. I've literally been trying one setting at a time all night long and it won't boot directly from the HDD no matter what I do. Another weird thing is I finally tried attaching the HDD to IDE1, DVD to IDE2 and it takes literally minutes for it to get to where the OS would load from the HDD and then it tells me I have an invalid system disk. I've tried "fail safe" settings, "optimal" settings, and nothing works. When I boot from CDROM with the XP disc in the drive, viola!, it reads XP for a moment from the drive and then the OS loads no problemo. Something is fishy, I just can't figure out what it is and I'm truly hoping it's not a bad board. I'm going to try clearing CMOS, reformatting (for the second time), and reinstalling with the HDD on IDE1 from the get-go.

Anyone have any ideas?

If you want to boot from the HPT 372 chipset then set the boot order with SCSI. Don't use HD unless you want to boot from the IDE controller.

Sometimes life is funny. Sometimes. First thing that pops into my head when I wake up this morning - "Hmmm... maybe if I set the jumper on the HDD to cable select it will work for me. That's weird, but in the past I've had a drive act up when set to master and it worked great when set to cable select so I might as well give it a try." I grab a flashlight and look at the jumper diagram on the HDD sticker and see the correct setting for cable select and start to pull the jumper when I notice that master doesn't have a jumper at all - all pins are open. So I'm sitting here trying to figure out why I have the middle set of pins closed, when I see the diagram says "master with slave present" for the middle pins. Guess it would benefit me to take one extra second next time and READ, huh? That one SECOND would have saved me HOURS of frustration! I completely removed the jumper, hit the power button, and XP booted in record time. I guess it's true what they say about getting a good night's sleep. Thanks for the replies!

Turtle-
The 4G4A+ only has one standard ATX power connector. The 12V power connector and the AUX from your power supply aren't used on this mobo, just tie them up with a twist tie and get them out of the way.

The connector for the fan from your PSU is probably just a monitor, and can be plugged into either the FAN2 or FAN3 connectors, or not at all. Usually the fan's power is hardwired into the PSU and the connector you see is just to monitor the speed.

hi again, much appreciation if someone can help me out :D

i have 2 WD hard drives trying to be put in Raid 0... i have created the array, and have partitioned the drive, but after formatting the partition i'm trying to install windows xp on, i get this error:

"setup was unable to format the partition. the disk may be damaged.

make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. if the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated. consult your computer manual or SCSI adapter documentation for more information.

you must select a different partition for windows XP. to continue, press enter."

i dont understand the make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated part... also the LED read-out that throws out post codes gives me "FF". in the back of the manual "FFh" says "Boot attempt (INT 19h)... don't know if that helps any... thanks in advance!

are you installing the RAID drivers from the floppy disk while installing XP ? I think that you have to press F6 at the starting of the installation.

I got my new 4G4A+ today, and i have some question.

have somebody tried a PC3500 stick on it yet?
Do you think that i would be able to use a PC3500 stick on it?

I would like to know which BIOS version is the best for overclocking.

I´ve download the 4/11 and the 4/24. which should i use or is there some other that is better?

okay, partitioning and formatting through fdisk instead of the win xp let me go through with installation... however fdisk could not recognize my full 2x120gb hard drives... it showed up as 30gb, even though it actually did the 240gb... i'm stuck with one 240gb partition as i let the setup keep going to make sure it atleast works... i'm going to re-partition/format... anyone have any ideas of how to get fdisk to recognize the full capacity of my drives so i can partition it correctly next time?

also i'm in windows as i type this, but the led read-out still throws out the post code "FF"... and while the computer boots, i get a couple other codes thrown at me, but when i check the manual, most of them say "Reserved." is that normal? thanks in advance guys

There is a fix available here Microsoft but you will have to have a computer running Win 98 to apply it.
I think you can still partition using your current version of fdisk by typing in a %. If you are creating one partition type in 100%.

The LED displaying FF when you are in windows is normal. Also when booting the LED will display various codes.

Hi
I saw an interessant thing on a french site.

It seems there is a new version of the board. The new version has a new "BR27" resistance on it. If you understand a bit french, check this article :

x86 secret

They said that this new version is 100% stable with 3 sticks of ram (1G) and all of the pci used.

If u can, check if u motherboards has the br27 resistance on it (it's on the back of the board with the name br27)

therecka What is the revision # of your board? You will find it on the lower left corner of your board to the left of the bottom PCI slot.

I have Rev 1.0 with original NB heatsink (one with Epox written on it).

The fin layout on the original NB heatsink doesn't look to be very efficient. Also no thermal compound or pad is used, so I added some AS3 to help. It seems Epox realized a better NB heatsink was needed and newer boards have one that looks it perfroms better.

I have revision 1.0 also. If yours has this "BR27" then I am sure all revision 1.0 boards have it unless Epox added it without changing the revision #. I'm not going to remove my board to find out. ;)

I was looking through the manual to find the rules for the keyboard power on feature. After upgrading to an MS Natural Pro USB keyboard, I am no longer able to power on the system with my keyboard command. Is this feature only avialable to PS/2 keyboards? Also, I seem to only be able to enter the bios and use my keyboard with the Natural plugged directly into the MB; I can't get it to work in the BIOS while plugged into my USB hub (powered).

Thanks!

I have gotten 4G4AI (one with onboard LAN) and pretty happy with what I got.
