I used to think it sucked ass, but after listening to it for a while, I think it's fitting to the show. Who sings it anyway?

It fits perfectly to the first episode if your asking me...hehe

I like it too. Though i think i like the cheesy imagery more. Man, i'd love to live in a time of space exploration. Bah.

That would be my greatest dream to. If NASA offered me the chance to colonize mars, with little or no possiblity of ever coming back to earth, I would probably go.

Heck, just waiting for T'Pol to make an appearance, listening to vanilla ice would grow on you too.

Also, I have a question. When was the policy changed where captains stayed onboard while the away teams went down to the surface. You saw a lot of this with Riker leading the away teams in TNG.

I think I read in the ST Encyclopedia or somewhere else that some captain was killed, so they changed the policy. Is that the case?

I especially loved the last episode. You notice how the first five in command were down on the "unknown" planet at first? Gheee, now thats a great way to lead. Wipe out the entire command structure. hehe

Bah UPN.

ice, ice baby ;)

yeh I was thinking that they were kind of stupid to send everyone. But you have to make mistakes sometime if you're going to learn from them.

On TOS, it was not unusual to see the entire command structure beam down to a planet. Kirk, Spock, Scotty, either a Soon to be dead crewman or a Buxom Young yeoman for Kirk to mess around with, and McCoy (so that he could say "He's dead, Jim") were a fairly standard for "away" missions

But my question is what changed that "rountine" between Kirk's time and Picard's command?

common sense, maybe? TOS was more of a gung-ho western style star trek, with TNG being more philosophical and realistic. After all, it makes just as much sense sending the captain on away missions as it does having the general of the army fight in the front

Well duh, but there WAS a reason listed in the ST Encyclopedia. I just can't remember what it was. I think some captain was taken hostage and murdered or something like that.

Yeah I wouldn't read too much into that Star Trek Encyclopeadia stuff. Star Trek is a show. Shows get ratings. Ratings = profits. Having the captain beam down the surface makes for exciting television. In TNG, they probably changed this policy because they were going for a more realistic approach (in real life, captain's don't leave their ships so quickly), and also it didn't really fit Picard's standoffish character. They're brining it back with Enterprise because Scott Bakula's character has a lot in common with Kirk.
