Finally someone who has the correct response I have been waiting for in this topic. If I knew how to give you a cookie, I would. Well, the first two paragraphs were what I was expecting for the intelligent answer. Your 3rd paragraph however... =)
The fact that PC enthusiasts are the custom-car makers of today, shows that it will continue to have a decreasing user-base. Yes, there will still be a PC community, but standardization into consoles will be where gaming is headed and most widely used. The xbox 360/playstation 3 are the beginning of the end of a dominant PC gaming community.
For your Apple comparison, I would say the only Apple thing going on here is the big "switch" that will occur from PC to console gaming starting with the release of these next gen consoles.

When you say stay on PC do you mean they will continue to be made for PC? Well if thats the case then how is it the end of PC gaming has started? Even if only 1 PC game was released a year and just 1 person played it then there would be no end to PC gaming? You should make up your mind either it's the end or it's not?

I haven't seen any change in the past several years when it comes to PC games. We continue to get FPS'ers,RTS's,RPG's,ect which is what PC gaming is made of. What exactly has happend recently to make you say such a thing anyway? Surely it's more than just the release of the 360?

wrong, xbox still isn't as high res as a PC. they simply can do more with less. halo 2 looks quite fancy on a modded P3 700 and a Geforce 4(?), but its at what... 640x480? very impressive
. let ATI or Nvidia develop a game specifically for 1 hardware set for a PC, and it would be disgustingly beautiful. or we can let epic do that for everyone with the unreal 3 engine

Thats what I keep telling people, but I'm short and hairy and no one listens.
The Xbox ran at about 640x480 interlaced. And it could only show 12 bit color but I think it worked in 16 bit color. So an individual frame of video only had 640x480x2 bytes of data or 614,400 bytes. And it looked OK because no body was playing it on a 1080p display at the time. By contrast, on the PC you can run it at 1600x1200x32 bit color which is about 7,680,000 bytes of data per frame. It was also limited at a much lower frame rate since Microsoft knew most TV's could only display 30 fps at the time.
So what you have is the PC processing more than 10 times the data at a higher frame rate and all the Xbox fans saying their system was better. Why? Cuz they're ignorant.
Just like the discussions I have with Mac lovers, I can only argue with ignorance for so long. Then my brain starts to hurt.

Why don't you try to use photoshop on an playstation? Edit some video? Produce music? Use Math applications to analyze the financial markets? Record from the TV?

WTF, TV? I seriously doubt PCs have come anywhere near replacing TVs for watching TV, HD or normal.
Anyhow, I'd say the Xbox was more harmful. With the launch of the Xbox 360, I see a convergence of platforms...nearly every interesting game on the 360 is also available for PC, and PCs will only get better while the 360 will stay the same.
That said, it's tempting to get an Xbox 360 since it does have good graphics, especially since it can do HD resolutions, or possibly PC with the VGA cable. However, the one advantage PCs have always had over consoles is more ram, and that's still no exception. For instance, based on a visual comparision, it appears that the texture quality settings in Call of Duty 2 on 360 are only set at the high setting, whereas the PC version has extra quality. It's likely the 360 couldn't do extra, as it only has 512MB of ram in total.
As far as the 360 release go, all it really offers right now is good graphics. Assuming it was even possible to find a 360, that $400 could be used to get a video card that provides graphics just as good, in fact I even considered it just because the 360 is basically impossible to find. Of course, with the 360, it's a console that will last for years, whereas a top of the line PC isn't top of the line for very long. That, and I'm still on an AXP, DDR, AGP system, so I'd rather wait until next year (probably around the time 360 is becoming readily available) and get an A64 dual core system, DDR2, PCI Express system that will blow the 360 away, and be upgradable.
when I saw the Xbox 360 at a local gamestop in action for the first time yesterday playing CoD 2 I was looking everywhere I could for something to gawk at...but...I couldn't. I know it's just one game, but CoD on my PC looks almost as good as CoD 2 on an Xbox 360. I'll give you my final opinion on Saturday if i get CoD 2 for my PC. I'm guessing that CoD 2 for pc is going to look a lot better than the Xbox 360 version, as the original looks almost as good.

no I dont think that PC gaming is over I think that it has just begun, I think that the PC gaming industry needs this jump in console gameing just like ying needs yang, you watch PC gaming in my opinion my have gotten a bit drab for a while but things are going to be on the up and up real soon. (it already is)

How I see it man, as 360 + PS3 get more computer-like/esque, it only reinforces the fact that PC gaming is fun and will be around a lot longer than consoles as these two are just hybrids of what a console was and what a PC is. Thank the other company for not taking this road.
Every new console people proclaim this. I'm sure we could dig out nearly identical posts from THIS forum saying the same thing when the PS2 and the Xbox came out. I won't be buying a console anytime soon.
