What's the whole point of all this stuff anyway? What really is affected by having Analog? Can't the stations choose if they want to broadcast in either one?

It's about updating a 40 year old standard.
And it's about money.....

Stations have little say as to what happens

Free's spectrum use.

Analog uses more spectrum. Digital= better picture quality, the ability to deliver HDTV, with less spectrum use.

You may also get several channels per station, IIRC they could split the spectrum per station to 5 channels. IE more available channels, depending on how they want to slice the pie.

Maybe, but why? Lose the 95+% of the viewers w/o digital recievers that don't even know the analog signal will end in '06?

Feel free to correct my understanding of this.

We just drive them with the VGA out of our sencore recievers.

Yup, I get 2 NBC and 2 ABC channels, shows up as 4, 4.1, 7, 7.1. Usually the second channel has news/weather.

On the second page of the article it says that most people won't be affected even if they have normal analog television sets, because they already use cable or satellite. This really only applies to people that still pick up over-the-air channels via attennae.

So three things will happen - there will be a surge in digital converter purchases, there will be a surge in new television purchases, and there will be a surge in cable/satellite signups.

I think it would be a good thing if they stuck with their cutoff date.

It's nice, but I've no inclination to get an HD setup any time soon, so if this went into effect I'd have to buy some silly convertor? Yaye. And what about people with less money than me? I guess they would too. Hey, if the gov't wants to give me a tax credit equal to the amount I spent on my convertor then I have no problem with it. Otherwise, fvck off and let the market dictate this.

digital != HDTV

The digital move has NOTHING to do with HDTV.

not according to the morons selling HDTV sets at best buy! :p

This is exaclty what I thought so I and most people I know will not be affected at all.

i'm against this since i've got a nice two-tuner 32" tv and analog tuners in both of my computers. however, i subscribe to cable. are you telling me that cable will continue to broadcast analog signals after this even if the broadcasters are sending out digital only? this seems odd but would be my preference rathar than having to buy a bunch of new hardware or rent a convert box from comcast.

You won't be affected, you don't currently get your signal from off the air. You get it from cable.

The only people this will affect is people who own a TV w/o cable/sat. Just the people using rabbit ears for local channels.

They've been saying that for the past 5 years? End analog TV? I don't think so.

..so what's going to happen to all those tvpc cards many have bought?? I have an old 3dfx tv card in one of my Athlon boxes wit rabbit ears on it..hardly ever use it but I guess it's doomed. I hardly ever watch tv..and it may be a blessing in desguise for the heart attacks loafing around watching the crap on tv.

Doesn't matter anyway really, because they can use that loophole to move this deadline back, and that's what they'll do.

Whats Asinine is your ignorance...

DTV and HDTV are not the same. Most people get their TV thru cable, or sat, which it wont effect at all.

Ill consider buying one when they decide to freaking come down off the price AND they decide on a standard for tuning. Then again, all of the programming is getting worse and worse....

I won't be buying a digital tuner. Not worth the benefit. Analog cable is fine. If that goes away, then screw it.
