The end of an era - Slysoft closes its doors for good

Sad day. Fair use took a real hit today.

It pisses me off that there is a DMCA exception to jailbreak phones but not one to rip disks that I buy.

It's a weird topic if I recall correctly. It is legal to make a rip of your disks but it isn't legal to bypass the copy protection. At least I thought that was the basic gist of the matter. One thing for sure, it's a bunch of BS for the consumer.

The strange thing here is that there is a 2015 DMCA exemption that allows for the bypassing of Blu Ray DRM for "remix" purposes. I'm not sure how that applies to making fair use backups though.

Well... I guess I'm glad I have my DVD library already ripped, but I was going in and reripping some of them with better quality settings. And I paid for the lifetime updates... 🙁

Or sell software to bypass the copy protection.

I wonder if this argument would pass muster with other things?
It is legal to bear arms, it is just illegal to sell guns or ammo.

Somehow I don't think our rights are being treated equally when large companies profit is on the line.

Its been that way for a while.

The only reason it isn't worse quite frankly is now technology companies like Google and Apple are more powerful than Hollywood. The DMCA was passed at the height of their power in the Clinton administration.

For the fallen...

Damn it, just found this thread, I too paid for a lifetime subscription many years ago. I guess in this case it's the lifetime of the company, not mine...

:'(

RIP Slysoft
