The end of a search

Always been a "hard core" pc user.

Had a desktop, 2.8Ghz HT, 1GB, dual Raptors, Geforce 6800, 30" LCD monitor. Just for games

Had a laptop, Dell Latitude CSx. P3 500. Web browsing from the couch.

Decided to get a new laptop, the old was getting slow. Ordered an Inspiron 6000, was very pleased. Then upgraded my desktop to a P4 3.2HT, Raptors still, and a X800 XL. Then it kind of hit me that I was having to go to my other room, use an expensive PC and expensive 30" LCD to play games. It was a great experience, but I found myself playing more and more games on the X300 in my 6000, than on my desktop.

So I decided to get a desktop replacement. Wasn't sure how well a Inspiron XPS2 or 9300 would hold up compared to my pretty cutting edge desktop. But after having my 9300 rig like I want it for the past couple of weeks, I don't forsee ever going back to a desktop.

There is enough modding and overclocking with a laptop now that hasn't really been previously availible. I have everything I will ever need (except a printer) computing wise and can be carried in a backpack and taken absolutely anywhere.

Inspiron 9300 with a 6800Go
Pin modded 1.6->2.13Ghz
Overclocked 6800Go from 290/590 to 371/750
2GB DDR2
60GB 7200RPM Drive
External HD for more storage
Cyber Snipa gamepad to use instead of a laptop keyboard
Small but great Logitech V200 mouse
Mobile Edge backpack
Extra battery
Lind electronics auto and air DC adapter
Getting a GPS rig going as well so I can use it in my truck when I explore the backwoods

I've been extremely impressed with this little laptop. With the overclocking it is fast. Extremely suprised with how zippy it is, even compared to my 3.2HT. Games run at 1440x900 and look great, can turn on every graphic option to high.

Just wonder if I'll be able to put in a 7800 mobile when they come out...

Just a testament to how far these little buggers have come. Can play BF2 from my comfy recliner and have The Daily Show going on directly behind it. And can take it anywhere.

Now to get the GPS and a TV Tuner....

All I can say is watch your temps with those OCs. I'm sure you already know that OCing laptops is generally not a good idea.

With CHC I'm pushing 0.700v at 800mhz 100% usage 27 degrees C
At 2.13 I'm running 1.180v 100% at 39 degrees, haven't gone further down yet with voltage
GPU runs 61 degrees at full load

This is with AS5

I doubt the heat is going to hurt worse than physically forcing a wire to bridge 2 pins on the cpu socket. Been 100% stable for a week.
