nice. i dont' udnerstand why the unemployment numbers get so mucha ttention. it seems to me the numbers of poeple who give up looking for work is a better indicator of the "recovery."

It's nice that he included the fact that none of jobs created in february came from the private sector. They all came from government spending! Remember when republicans were for small government?

Guess Dave started early on not looking for work....nice to see people just stop looking, real testament to the mentality of todays american workers..

Apparently you make enough money to have a house, two cars, a computer and high speed Internet access so you can spend your entire day spinning political columns.

Yep - they are so "unemployed" they quit looking
rolleye.gif
Seems to me that if you quit looking then you don't want a job and shouldn't be counted as unemployed just like other people who choose not to be employed like stay at home moms and people who retire.

But yeah - it says something about how our work ethic has declined here - people now seem to think they are "entitled" to a job....or can find employment by not looking😕

Exactly, anyone who "quits" looking for a job obviously isn't motivated enough or not bright enough to hold theirs in the first place IMHO, Dave and Co. will come in here and whine about nothing in their area...why one wouldn't pick up and move to a more prosperous area is beyond me? especially as others have said he must be doing ok on social services to afford high speed internet, his house and two cars....

What really gets me is that people do feel they are entitled to a job even if they have no customer skills, no technical skills or really nothing to bring to the table...heck I have heard of people who don't even call in if they are going to be sick or absent a day and then wonder why they were fired...

I have said it before, and I will say it again...I moved from a prosperous job in Washington DC to possibly one of the worst areas for IT after the dot bomb, Massachusetts, and I still managed to find work in just a little over a month....I still know many who are either out of IT work or bussing tables somewhere, is it because there are no IT jobs, partially, but moreso because they sucked and they deserve to be out of IT now....if you are good at what you do, or you have great people skills and as long as you can look presentable and speak fluent english then you will find work in this country, might have to take a pay cut, but it is better than leeching off the system.

Absolutely, that's right, the New America, just a bunch of Carpet Bagging Nomads wandering aimlessly from low wage job to low wage job in the Caste System created and controlled by the RBC. How Lovely

Wow. You like that they Quit Looking because it makes for better numbers(Unemployment Rate), now you condemn them for ceasing to look for Jobs that don't exist! You got class man.

Anyone who thinks that jobs don't exist in this country is in denial. If I lost my job and was unable to to find work for an extended period of time, I could go out tomorrow and find work in entry level jobs (that need no qualifications) that would enable me to get by without starving my family or loosing my home. It may take several jobs to make ends meet but I would do what needs to be done until I'm able to work again in my chosen field or reeducate myself. Franky people who are not working (doing whatever) and would rather sit home and whine rather that take jobs that are "beneath them", they deserve what they get and do not deserve my sympathy nor my tax dollars. Fact is that the people that are in the quit looking statistic have either never intended to actually work , not willing to work at a job that is harder,or have gone to work for themselves.
The recent upsurge in self employment is not factored into the "have quit looking for work" category. My company for example has gone totally to hiring consultants and freelance workers. All of which have lost there full time job in the past year. The workers are making at least what they were before and are very happy with there current jobs, works good for all involved. According to the way the statistics are done they are all in the "have quit looking for work" category.
People the jobless rate in this country is 5.6%, that is the lowest (by far) of any Western country. I was taut in collage economics that 4% is considered 0 unemployment, because at any given time 4% of the work force chooses not to work for whatever reason. The economy is going through a fundamental change, we can either whine about the good'ol days or we adapt. We will in the end be stronger for it.

Yes, we should adapt by lowering our wages and standard of living to that of India and China. Then we will be truly competitive globally- excellent infrastructure, mature rule of law, and cheap labor.

There is a good well thought out rebuttal.
So by your plan raising tariffs on imports and mandating higher wages is the approach we should take?
If thats the case, we should get used to the type of unemployment the Europe enjoys.....................

Fact is that unless we close our borders to imports, we cannot compete with India and Chinese labor. To try to do so is foolish. We are in a world economy like it or not. We foolishly tried to protect the steel industry and look where that got us. We must compete by being better, faster, cheaper (manufacturing technology). Not by protectionism.

High wages is why no one wants US steel because the cost is too high. High wages, insurance, mandatory healthcare, are teh reasons compnies are going bankrupt. Let capitolism work and stop posting socialist crap. If socialism.communisum worked russia would have won the cold war.

Actually, I have 2 houses and 4 cars and 15 computers at home and have the MAX speed DSL possible to get for me. Does this make me a bad person because I have a job?

- talk about being obtuse...

The unemployment rate is down and people are claiming that people just stopped looking because the economy is so bad. I think that is utter BS. If a person doesn't want a job - they quit looking. If they want a job then they LOOK for a job. Those who whine and are NOT looking are the ones who think they are "entitled" to a job. Those who aren't actively looking for a job should not be counted in the employment/unemployment index. And likewise those who are self-employed(contract etc) need a way to be counted as employed whereas currently they really don't show up.

Yes, there are Available Jobs, there almost always is. What's missing are New Jobs, which are necessary to absorb the 150kish(on average)/month of people eligible for Jobs. The 5.6% is a misnomer, the actual number when Eligible Workers are factored in is 6ish%.

So that's it? They simply don't want to work? Perhaps they just have given up out of frustration, since they were working not long ago.

Well - who is going to determine why? Does it matter why? The number is an index. Those that wish to work should be counted because they will BE LOOKING! Those who don't want to work aren't looking. It really is that simple.
There is NO excuse for not actually LOOKING for a job if are unemployed and want to(and are able to) work.
