5-6 years ago, Walmart bought the vacant shopping center behind our offices and plopped down a super Walmart. So, as you could imagine, people would tend to walk over to Walmart for snacks rather than use the vending machine ($0.80 for a regular Twix in the vending machine, $0.88 for a double-size Twix at Walmart; $1.00/bag for microwave popcorn in the vending machine, $1.50 for package of 3 bags at Walmart, etc). The vending machine folks' response to declining sales: repeatedly raise their prices. The mind boggles.

Our 20z sodas are still $1.10. I don't eat much in the vendor machines so I don't know the exact prices.....Humm..maybe time to check them out now.

I'm only 20 and I remember when soda's were 50 cents and snacks were 25-50 cents. Now a bag of chips is $1.50 and a soda is $1.25

you work for a soda company

Yes sir I do. Any beverage that is either produced or distributed by us we get for $.25. That means sobes, Amp energy drinks(even the tall boys that are over $2 in the stores) 20oz sodas and various bottles teas, etc.

Though like I said the snack foods are still the same prices, but I never see anyone buying from those machines.

Now is the time to seize the moment !
Go to Sams and purchase all the popular snacks in bulk.
Sell them in the office !
Profit !

I used to work for a non-profit, so they pretty much sold items close to cost. 12oz can of soda for .50, or a bottle for $1.00, .50 for chips etc.

12oz soda for 50 cents is not close to cost.

You can buy a 24 pack of Coke brand sodas for $6.99 around here, $5.99 on sale. That's about 30 cents a can or less.

+vending machine rental fee

We're non-profit as well. But I don't know how that works for internal income that comes from employees and back into the company.

all the money from our soda machine goes to buying new sodas, they are 50 cents still. the candy machines fund the bbqs and parties we have yearly, as well as buying more candy. doing this took off some of the burden for the parties and made them happen more often. the company is more willing to give cash if they are only "pitching in" instead of footing the whole bill i guess.

Thats just from the vending machines, thats not what they sell to us as employees with a discount. I just bought a case(24 pack) or soda for $3 yesterday. I don't drink a lot of soda so it lasts me a while. I buy cases of Amp and Sobe Adrenaline(12 packs) for $4 and once in a while I will pick up some Starbucks coffees in the 4 packs. We have to buy the starbucks in a case of 8, 4 packs in it. I get those for $4 as well. 🙂 We distribute a lot of different beverages and get them for pretty cheap.

They wouldn't be able to compete with Walmart on prices. Walmarts shelves are stocked by the truck load, a couple of vending machines take time to stock and get the money out of. Even if the company could get the same wholesale price on the snacks (which is unlikely) they would be stuck with too much overhead. There is a science to vending machine pricing. If a certain % of employees are no longer vending maching customers, the smaller % that still are (think of the fattest/laziest/dumbest person in your office) still buys, they will just pay more to make up for lost volume. Not to mention the vending co has less overhead, they refill the machines less.

But stuff and bring it in to work. Vending machine stuff is always expensive.

Pringles: Tiny canister for $1. Or go to the store and buy a tall canister for the same price.

Soda: $1.25 for 20oz in the machine, or about the same price for 2L (67.63oz).

Kool-Aid: $0.15 + the cost of 1C sugar = 64oz. Doesn't get much cheaper than that for flavored sugar water.

Silicon Valley company here, where we still have free sodas and bottled water, and $0.25 vending machine food.

I thought I worked for the cheapest company on the planet, but we have an entire kitchen full of candy and soda and all sorts of stuff. Everything is $.25.

he's pissed his company is no longer subsidizing his snacks and blaming it on the economy

I really don't think vi_edit intended his post to be taken seriously...

There's blood in the cubicle rows over this one. Mobs are forming with people wielding staplers and plastic sporks.

I think somebody even started bags of popcorn on fire in the microwave in protest.

Gas prices can take our SUV's...but you'll never take our junk food!

As an owner / operator, everytime gas goes up , my paycheck shrinks, and the fuel increases are part of that "trickle down" thing Raygun meant.

Not really. Hardly anyone in the office is overweight in fact.
