the economic downturn has finally hit home

after almost 2 years of having a cushy M-F schedule, I'm being forced to work weekends again because some dumbass went and got himself fired and the powers that be don't want to hire a replacement :frown:

I at least eked out a promise by upper management that I'd be the first person off weekends as soon as someone else was brought into the department, but it still sucks 🙁 after 3 years of working shit schedules (overnights, the dreaded 4 pm - 12 am shift, and weekends) it's been nice the past 2 years having my schedule actually sync up with my white collar 9-5 friends.

I work 9pm-7am through Sunday night, and it's supposed to be -15 tonight..if that makes you feel any better. 😛

That should really be illegal, there's no way an employer should force it's workers to go beyond the 40 hour work week unless they agree to it.

it's still 40 hours/week (well, 80 hours every 2 weeks, the schedule we're switching to is a little complicated), I'm just being forced to have off Fri/Sat instead of Sat/Sun (also, every Tuesday + every other Wednesday off, but who cares about weekdays?).

I at least had enough clout to demand the best of the schedules, even if it is the best of the worst. lol.

Its pretty evenly split among my friends. Half are m-f 9-5 like me and the others are deadbeats or retail so they have random days off and can attend weekday events. The 9-5'ers don't have as much fun as the other group. 🙁

Boo-frickin-hoo.

Wait... you're needed by your employer more than ever and you're bitching about it?

I didn't bitch or moan in the meeting with my boss or anything. I mean, if this is what we have to do, this is what we have to do.

I just asked for a promise that I'd be the first one off weekends as soon as we hire someone or transfer someone into the department from within. I don't mind working a weekend day for now (too much) but I don't want my boss to forget that I've been M-F for two years and have already spent more time working crap hours than just about anyone else in the department.

I am "white coller" and work nights/weekends frequently... In fact, I'm work 7pm to 6am for the next two weeks, weekend included. Yes, it sucks, but it the price of having a job at times.

Exactly, right now, be grateful to have a job. I feel fairly secure in mine, but you really can never know. The higher ups can decide they need to cut the budget at "X", and out you go. It happened to me too many times in the post tech bubble. Get a job only to find out that dept is being outsourced, shut down, etc.
I did many a 3rd shift gig. Didn't like it, but it paid the rent.

My brother was supposed to have his internship with Caterpillar this summer in a different location than last summer and they canceled it on him.

Shift schedule?

Same here, I work Thur-Sat and every other Wed, 7am-7pm. Working weekends suck. Working weekends for 12 hours starting at 7am sucks.

everyone's QQing everywhere....everyone's saying you should be lucky to have a job, some are saying they have to work more then they used too...

weird schedule though.

I feel ya man... For the past few months, I've had to cover an open spot in the operations center where I work. The hours were 7 AM to 7:30 PM, Sunday through Wednesday. Ugh.

Sure, the idea of having a three day weekend every week sounds nice... except that you're so tired after working 50 hours squeezed into a 4 days that you just want to sleep the entire first day off.

if it makes you feel any better, I have worked around 57 hours so far this week and I still have to go in tomorrow. I am so exhausted🙁

...And then there's the real world.🙂
