Just watching a great show on PBS called "Destination America".

Its just so amazing and makes me feel good that we took in so many people who were persecuted for their religion. The Amish, the menonites, Tibetans, Burmese, hasidic and other Jews.

Just watching how the Nazis, the Chinese, the Swiss and others in the past and present have persecuted so many religious people. Its really humbling actually. I am so glad I am in America, being able to worship anyone and anything, or not to worship anyone and anything.

I just hope that we take in more people who are being oppressed in parts of the world today. That is our duty, being the most free and tolerant country in the world. That is also our duty, as being the world's greatest power. I cannot sit still while our government ignores the refugees that are dieing each day. Those people deserve to come to this country.

Why do we see so many Amish in Pennsylvania today? Those people fled their homelands and came to America, the land of the free.

You don't read much American history, do you?

Our current level of acceptance has taken quite some time to reach.

And where did I ever say we are perfect?

You just couldn't wait to bash America, could you?

We are talking about people fleeing to America to escape the horrors of religious persecution in their homeland. To them, America is the land of the free where they are able to practice their traditions, for the most part. At that particular time, there was no place on earth as tolerant as today.

To someone who was born in America, that may or may not mean much.

You're speaking in present tense now, which I wholeheartedly agree that we are what would should have been many years ago.

But the truth is, we have a pretty tarnished record as far as acceptance is concerned. And it is important that we know it and acknowledge it to make sure that it never happens again.

It wasn't that long ago that deeds to houses would have two things on the bottom of them: no blacks and no Jews allowed.

The whole first world has been sympathetic to religious persecution.

As for your example: Much of the pennslyvania dutch moved from the US to Canada; I know this because I am half Amish (Menonite to be more specific).

Your blind patriotism ignores the progress other nations have made in the past; America itself has some aspects of its past which have been quite negative; it has grown through that, so have many other countries. America being younger will obviously have a less traumatic history, this is acknowledged; what were you expecting...a US fluff-fest?

Like I said, noone is perfect, and this country surely is not. Compared to other places at the time, we were far better off. That is why people came here in such large numbers.

One of the worst mistakes we made was denying many Jews trying to flee Europe in the 1930s and 1940s.

We still have room to grow. There are still people here in America, who would like to tell those Tibetans, Amish, etc. how to worship, live, and believe. We have to be vigilant

Any Crouser's in your family tree? I too am a descendent of Pennsylvania Dutch. Most of my mother's family immigrated to Alberta early in the 20th century and live there(descendants) to this day. My brother's American wife(Washington State) is also a descendant of Pennsylvanians making us joke that the two might be Cousins and that the marriage should be nullified. :D

I'd say that Canada is far more tolerant, but probably not as free and not nearly as powerful.

No, you are just out of touch. I guess I should have expected this from a white person.
