The Flat Earth society has members all around the globe.

Dont you mean across? Around implies its actually a sphere, which is clearly not the case. How many perfectly round rocks have you ever seen?

Here is how to tell if the Earth is round or flat:
Take a spot 10 or 20 feet across and make it perfectly flat and level. Dump a pail of water in the middle , and if you end up with a puddle , the earth is round. If the earth was flat , it would all run off !
Have fun figuring that one out :)

If you launched them into space, they would see that the Earth wasn't...

Oh, I understand now.

Which begs the questions: How do you determine who is acting on an ego thing and who really is that fucked up? And is it better or worse to be the stupidest person on Earth ironically as opposed to the stupidest person on Earth naturally?
Well these questions don't have a great deal of importance to me because I'm confident without, I think, being opinionated egotistically, that neither you or I are anywhere near being the stupidest people on the planet, but I would suggest that if you examine your feelings honestly, you will find that feeling deeply buried within. It is just very difficult to get at because it will instilled with great pain and very long ago in childhood.

What you can infer, I think, is that where there is a desire to use stupid as an insult to others, that fact will tell you that you have experienced such an insult to your own being, and the urge to hurt others with that insult comes from the fact we were hurt that way.

So you can say that the need to insult others is an indication of damaged self respect that is masked by the arrogant notion it is the other, somebody else, that is stupid. That arrogance is ego. It wants to hurt others to satisfy the urge to hurt back when you have been hurt. To be free of ego then, is to let go of the attitude that one has the right to inflict such pain. We were deeply hurt and closed our wounds with the scar tissue of numbness. The way out is to go up on the cross to suffer. I know you are not religious and neither am I, but the best analogy for this healing process in our cultural repertoire is that of Christ on the cross. When you are aware that all of the pain you were dealt as a child couldn't have been otherwise, we were slain by monsters who were psychologically unaware of their own self hate, and there is nothing to do but forgive, to suffer with the abandonment of revenge, the result is resurrection, the awakening into heaven, the realization by actual memory via suffering, that there was never anything wrong with you. In this way the child that died is reborn.

I suggest, furthermore, that Jesus was a man who actually achieved all this and willingly gave his life to exemplify for the record that others could also achieve this. It is for this reason that I respect what I see as the true meaning of the Christian religion. What the sick and unrecovered have done to that religion is all horse shit.

How would you go about countering them? Shutting them down with force? Shutting them down with your version of science? Ridiculing them?

Some of you people here are very judgmental but I'm not a flat earther. However, it is weird how passionate some people are over this kind of stuff. Look on Youtube - it's like a religion. One side picks one religion and they fight each other. It's sad in some ways.

LOL, there is flat earth paraphernalia too. It's similar to a religion like I said.

Ah, what a world. Where people live in their own little illusions.

How about teaching them? You know, enlightenment?

And if that doesn't work, then yes, ridicule and shame is appropriate.

Shaq's comment was a joke.

Kyrie Irving does believe the earth is flat though.

As I think I've mentioned before, what I really don't get is these rich people who think the earth is flat. They have the means to charter an airplane and fly to the end of the earth and document that it's flat. Kyrie Irving makes a shitload of money off basketball but he would likely make far more money by disproving the last 400 years of science on the issue.

I don't get it. If the earth is flat go to the edge and take a picture. Case closed.

I had the same thought. You can get on a plane in NY and fly to Germany then fly to Turkey then to India then to Japan then to California then back to NY. I'm assuming they are thinking there is some kind of global Pilot and Ship conspiracy and they are just traveling in circles but my next thought was why don't they bring a compass?
It's easier to just accept they are dummies
Similar to the super hot girl I went out with in the early 90s not understanding why people in Europe celebrate xmas but not thanksgiving

she did look real good but ugly in many other ways that only a young man can overlook.
Point is she was smart enough to look great and even walk & stand hot looking. Like the Basketball ball players all the smarts were somewhere else, critical thinking is a waste of time for them.

Just imagine how much we may take for granted as unconscious unexamined assumptions, totally unaware perhaps in some more enlightened future, it will be us they think of as stupid. Perhaps, since some of us can see how resistant we can be to seeing our own foolishness when it is held up to condemnation, it would behoove us to be more sympathetic of others to reduce our own self condemnation for similar failings. In that way, as it is the meek whom Jesus saw as those best able to hear his message we can keep our own channels to self awareness more open.

Or we can just go "Look, in no way is it flat! That just doesn't work. Time to stop being silly and self indulgent about how stuff works!"?

Actually seriously, Tila Tequila had a stroke and then afterward became among other things a nazi and conspiracy theorist. I can actually think of a few others whose politics took a sudden swerve to the right after actual literal brain damage. I don't have the time to look up Australian cartoonist Bill Leak, but Blue Max can probably link some of his work after his unfortunate accident.

Careful, that would include islamists which is a protected class! http://www.skeptical-science.com/religion/quran-state-earth-flat/

Boy are you going to be amazed if you look at genesis. Comically incorrect cosmology is a common thread in Abrahamic religions.

Incidentally how do you arrive at the conclusion that literally all criticism of protected classes is verboten, or is it just an article of faith you repeat to yourself to justify who you've become?

Well, as a person from the far future who has popped up in your time, I came to suggest that the notion of silly and self indulgent are about as real as a flat earth. So as a serious and self-disciplined person, I am sure you will now agree with me, right?

If you could just demand that people be reasonable, the world would have been cured long ago, I think. I believe you can understand nothing of importance with out understand what motivates irrational behavior and the motivator is the deflection of the awareness of our self hate.

Flat earthers tend to correspond pretty well with conspiracy theory belief. Conspiracy theories are more for the excitement of the things "they" don't want you to believe, even if those things are mutually contradictory. Looking at the belief is missing the point, it's the conspiracy that's where they get their sweet sweet dopamine pumping action.

Real talk: part of the Flat-Earth theory is that there's some kind of teleportation system that immediately transports you to the opposite edge of the Earth upon approaching it.

Another part has something to do with Antarctica, and how the superpowers of the world are actively denying people from flying down there to "find the truth".

I'm deadly serious; was "enlightened" by a true Flat-Earth believer.

Edit: don't mind the fact that somehow, we're able to achieve teleportation, yet we "can't really go into outer space...
