This is sorta funny. I was upgrading my hp celery to a slot a athlon and mobo. All went well and I'm new so while connecting my HD I had two cables, a skinny and a fat. Well I'm used too car stereos and in that field bigger wire is better so Imediatly I thought "I'm not putting that skinny a$$ cable in my Rig. Took 2 mo too figure out what that 80 pin connector that my bios kept saying wasn't installed belonged to. hehe

Added a second HD and had all drive letter assignments below D turned-off. Took me a couple days to figure out why I couldn't access my new drive.

I took a chunk out of my thumb trying to pop out a metal face plate that hadn't been pre-cut. I had to go to the emergency room to get the bleeding to stop and still have the scar to prove it.

During the countless times I've built/upgraded/serviced comps I can't even continue to keep track of how many times I've spent a good deal of time before noticing that my IDE/Floppy cables are upside down. And that's not even a difficult thing to spot! :p

Ugh...I built my parents 2 PCs. I also arranged a purchase of a home-built system (from BigC;)) for my neighbor. Worst ideas ever. :|

The dumbest thing I did was work on a pc with a little kid around.. I was helping my sister install a new soundcard into her pc when her son decided he wanted to share his Pepsi with the computer... I had no idea that much smoke could be produced from one PC....

i plugged in a fan with bare leads while the computer was still running, i've never seen sparks shoot out a molex connector before.

Pulled on the keyboard wire too hard (damn 1 pound heatsink makes it top heavy as it is) and the case falls over with the cover off nearly killing everything in it's path.

Listen here.

BTW, both tabs on the socket were broken, the video card was destroyed, motherboard FUBAR, die chipped on CPU (Athlon 1 GHz) AND THE CPU STILL WORKED!!! :D

Cheers!

Never unplug a CD-ROM drive while the PC it's connected to is still running. It will cause the PSU to either shut down or blow.

This PC survived it, luckily :)

Used a PCChips motherboard :)

Those things never have a single standard pinout connector nor is there ANY support for them whatsoever

Well I don't have a really good personal experience, but my roomate built a pc with a PC-Chips motherboard. Oh boy!!! Big mistake, he ended up going medievil on it like they did to that printer in Office Space. I can honestly say it was the funniest thing I have ever seen.

[/Edit-That's funny demon-xanth, i started replying before you posted that-Edit]

Accidentally plugged in a small power supply cable into the mobo, when i thought i was plugging in the power LED into the mobo. Luckily, only fried the cable, not the board....

I neglected to check all the connections on my watercool/pelt system before firing it up. When testing it outside of the case I checked everything and all worked well. Nothing like having your CPU overheat while you are trying to get the water shut down (on different PSU).

blew multiple home-made fuses on a fried AT power supply til i figured out i needed to replace 3 diodes :p
making home made fuses out of really thin copper wire is a pain if you aren't used to using a soldering iron :p
