The dude from Byte Magazine "bites" back over "unstable" Athlon chipsets

<< A system can be solid and still have quirks. I have an AMD system that runs "rock solid" as you put it, but when I hook up an optical mouse to it, it never turns off laser, even when the computer is shut off. The big thing he was dumping on was chipsets, and since most pre-built Athlon PC's come with VIA chipsets, its no wonder he wouldent recomend an Athlon system to someone. >>

Yeah I do know what you mean.. I've never experienced anything like that though.. both of the systems i've had as my main gaming rig have been to my knowledge completely quirk free and run amazingly.. maybe i am lucky, but i now have 100% faith in the Athlon platform...

<< Yep, you guys are all 100% correct. There are absolutely no problems with the VIA chipsets. None at all. Nada, zip, zilch. >>

Yep, VIA chipsets are always the first choice for business servers they are the BEST! :sarcasm:

On a side note, i'd have to say 1/3rd the traffic these forums gets is easily traced back to VIA chipset problems people are trying to fix.

This thread is incorrectly titled Athlon chipsets, the Byte Mag guy was talking about all AMD chipsets, not just Athlon. Either way, you're still my hero if you've never had a problem with an Athlon based system. Current Athlon chipsets have made significant strides and are pretty decent for the most part, but the initial chipsets were just plain bad from a number of perspectives.

hmmm I havebeen runningmy system on a soyo 6vca board for about a year now. Been through 3 operating systems, 98,2k, and now xp. (and twice as many video cards). The 6vca is an via apollo pro 133a chipset running my pentium 3. I have had zero problems with this combination. Maybe the instability problems are just with the via solution for AMD cpu's.

I don't know, I can go to Intels web site and look at their Bios fixes for their BX2 board and it went up to 17, about.
Fixing all kinds of little problems here and there. Remember LX chipset MB's incapable of running Nvida cards cause they didn't supply enough oomph to AGP?
Now that AMD chipsets have matured I have no problem recommending them, where a year ago I was telling people to stay away.
