They are trying to bring back the draft. A bill before the Senate:

To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

...

(a) OBLIGATION FOR YOUNG PERSONS- It is the obligation of every citizen of the United States, and every other person residing in the United States, who is between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform a period of national service as prescribed in this Act unless exempted under the provisions of this Act.

(b) FORM OF NATIONAL SERVICE- National service under this Act shall be performed either--

(1) as a member of an active or reserve component of the uniformed services; or

(2) in a civilian capacity that, as determined by the President, promotes the national defense, including national or community service and homeland security.

Time to write your Senator and let him know that the draft should not come back.

I assume this is on the brought up Rangell(D). It does not have a chance at passing.

Depending on what "national or community service" means, I could see myself supporting this measure. Assuming that there could be student deferrments, and combat action remains voluntary (maybe with additional incentives), this could be great. We need to give something for 18 year olds to do, if they don't want to go to school right out of High School. Send 'em in international relief, or community outreach for the mentally ill. Make 'em human.

This is over a year and a half old. this is not a draft call it is simply a refinement of the existing draft laws.

Mandatory service for everyone != draft. The Romans had mandatory service for every male in the military - two years I believe. It gives people stock in their country. Don't agree with it, but it has its virtues and its pitfalls like most other things. I think we're doing quite all right without it though.

IOt wouldn't be bad idiea if it weren't for those like the Dub and his nefarious network of Neocon's who would use our youth as cannon fooder to further their Foriegn Agenda much like LBJ and Nixon did back in the mid to late 60's and early 70's.

Well not yet. It depends on how adventurous the Dub and his PNAC buddies get if the Dub wins the election.

Just curious if you will volunteer to be among the thousands of civilians killed if we ignore a problem and it turns out we were wrong?

God forbid we stop a genocide in Sudan, a terrorist harboring nation in Syria, and a Nuke building nation in Iran.

Luckily for you it seems the UN is more than happy to actually think about doing something about the Sudan and Iran. Although I have a feeliing they wont really do much of anything. They are the UN afterall.

Of course not. He will be front and center to complain we did nothing.

My word, twin brothers of different mothers. You don't like my opinion so you try to insult me. All I said is that if the Dub gets adventerous and decides to attack those countries we will need to have a draft so we could have enough boots on the ground to do it. Do you deny that or are you just satisfied with taking cheap shots at me?

If you consider that a cheapshot then it may contain a little truth.

I'll have to read bill in full, but it sounds like they may finally have gotten it right. There's nothing wrong with asking for some form of civil service, as long as it's EVERYONE and not just men that have to do it. There can be NO exceptions, especially not for the presidents own children. EVERYONE serves if anyone does. It can't be required military, because not everyone believes in harming others. But something. Reserve police officer, medical assistant, community service, park ranger, etc.

I like the idea of giving an option. If you accept civil service and complete it you can receive government assistance, like school loans and pell grants and unemployment. I think the montgomery gi bill should get a boost too and be offered to any civil service participant, not just military. Or keep the gi bill military but add another that anyone can get. If you choose not to serve, you can NEVER for any reason get ANY help from and state or federal agency, PERIOD.

Reinstating a draft or any mandatory military service in the US will bring back civil unrest like NOTHING we've seen in the past.
