The Rebel Alliance would have it's own website.
Although I know a little html...I use FrontPage...for me, it's the easies way to make a webpage, no matter how little you know about webpages. 😉 So plz give it a shot, believe me it's fun! 😀

We can talk about this, being a proud member of Team RA-SETI! 😉

Some thoughts and questions as I work on an index page layout here...
  1. IMHO, we should leave alpha projects (and maybe beta projects also, I don't know) off the main list. I removed Predictor@Home from the list that I have on my template for that reason, but haven't taken time to check some of the other uncommon ones. Note that I don't advocate not mentioning them at all, I just think we should have an "experimental" section where people can go to see what's new and different, while the newcomers won't get drawn into a test project, have a bad experience, and give up on DC in general.
  2. Should we list distributed.net projects? I notice they aren't in amdxborg's page, but perhaps he just forgot. We all probably are familiar with the actions of the d.net folks relating to Dave McOwnen's legal battles, and some still have bad feelings toward them due to that (I personally can't say that I like them for it either; I don't/won't run RC5 or OGR, but that's not the primary reason). With that in mind, should they be listed? In my opinion, we have some (albiet a very few) who do crunch for the TeAm in those projects, and we shouldn't leave their efforts unnoticed.
  3. Is a TeAm News section even worth including? I know we used to have a newsletter, but that section seemed outdated even when I joined the forums a few years ago. It wouldn't hurt to have one, if we could have a maintainer (CMS comes in to the picture here).
Thanks in advance for your comments. 🙂

Here's a very early alpha of my proposed template. I post this not so you all can see how pretty it is (because it isn't), but rather that if you think the design has some potential, you can offer feedback before I get too far into the design process, where it would become much more difficult to change anything. Please let me know what you think. 🙂

Cool... do you envision the team projects be links to content (a page) dedicated to running the client, potential problems, FAQs, links to stats, etc ? That seems logical to me...

I envision a structure basically similar to what you summarized. The team projects list will link to individual pages, each of which contains a basic summary, with links to the project homepage, stats, FAQs, etc. (this makes more sense to me than having the project list on the index page link to project home pages, with duplicate project lists under the FAQ, stats, and other sections).

What I'm not sure about yet is what to use the sidebar for. At this time I'm thinking to leave it basically unoccupied (except for perhaps a "recent updates" column) on the index (home) page, but move the project list over into it in the subpages, to facilitate navigation. This concept still doesn't leave me entirely satisfied, however, so this is definitely an area where more thought and planning should be applied, IMHO.

Here's the point. Shut up and do, or just shut up. Period. The end.

I'm starting to think I need a vacation from AT. ugh.

The food court seems to have a standard template for each project that you link to... pros, cons, etc... I like the template idea... it's easy to manage. Perhaps the sidebar could be current standing in the various projects with a quick snapshot of movement in the project, whatever would fit without clutterning... (I like the clean approach!)... each line could be a quick link to the TA stats page for that project 🙂

I'll give The Food Court better than a quick glance here in a moment; the front page is attractive, though a bit graphics-heavy for my dialup-limited self. 😉

If I end up designing the template, then I think that the bulk of the navigation will go in the sidebar, like it does in most standard arrangements. The center section of the home page will be used for highlights, recent links, news, etc. And, of course, the site will resize to fit any reasonably sized browser window, unlike the AnandTech site and forums. Fixed width sites (especially those above 800x600 in width) suck. I'll post a [hopefully somewhat improved] version here in a bit.

BTW, does anyone object to me starting a new thread for this specific topic, if we feel that this is a good direction to pursue? I just have to think that the ill-chosen title (not many older DC people will click on anything that has "l33tsp34k" in the title) does not help to bring in a good part of potential visitors...

No offence guys, but if you think it should be done that bad "shut up and do it."

If one actually knew how to make a website then yes, I would. 😉 It was meant to be more of a comment and not another "slam PorBleemo the scapegoat" thread.

scapegoat...lol Man you're funny! 😉 I agree, no reason to take everything out on you!

Probably a waste of bandwidth but here goes.....................I am still getting over what Amxborg did with Anandtech?s pages(s). That was really neat Amxborg. And very intuitive for me.

jliechty, I think you are on the right track. Links on the side seem good to me with text stuff in the middle. (as more of a layman user) I did like the ranking list on the right though. Nice to have it out front from my point of view.

Really nice work guys. Don?t stop?????

About the only thing I can do with a program is use it????😛

Nice overhaul on the UI! 🙂 I've got some ideas for gussying it up too... lemme look as some of those links you sent for content management.

Also, (to everyone I guess)... where are you guys getting the overall standings per project? Tell me you're not culling them from each individual projects!

I took them from amdxborg's page, just as a quick reference. My idea for the future site, is that the "Quick stats" section will be set up to pull stats info from your stats database for the TeAm rank, and the link will point to the TeAm section of that project's stats. For one, this will keep the quick stats section shorter (a real lengthy list for every project's stats would be out of place on the main page), since it will only reference stats in your database, and for two, it will keep it very up to date (real time, or almost real time if the info is cached). Or, instead of listing things redundantly, we could just put a set of parenthesises after each project name in the projects list, and put the team rank there, though that wouldn't make quite as much sense UI-wise. This is one area where we'll have to experiment and see what works and looks best.

This has been tried before, and it usually fizzles out due to various reasons. Nice try though.

Seems like we already have 2 vary nice TeAm DC web pages already:
amdxborg's
Wolfsraider's

Why not just have the Team AnandTech link on the front page link to one of those or just until the teamanandtech.com page can be updated?

Oh, & a bump 🙂
