The Digital Millenium Copyright Act taken to a whole new level--ACTA

here's some info about it:

What if ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) passes? What good did the DMCA do? I can't think of any good that it did; it was tyrannical and made it a criminal offense to infringe upon copyrights.

Is anyone else sick of all of these corporatist international trade agreements?

If more people realized that seemingly innocent corporations like The Walt Disney Company (amongst many others, including RIAA members) were out to destroy our freedoms they might think differently of them. I have personally hated on Disney for years, yet I know I am in the extreme minority...

The law making process would almost be funny if it wasn't tragic. Like when Mattel sold all those lead painted chinese toys to kids. What happens? A law is passed that screws over small toy makers super bad, and then MATTEL is made exempt from many of the rules that were only created because of them.

USA! USA!

It's not Mickey Mouse that I hate, I hate that they use innocent/family oriented cartoons, movies, TV programs, themeparks, etc to fund the assault on our individual rights.

Which individual rights is Walt Disney leading the charge to take away?

Under ACTA, the very suspicion or allegation of having downloaded or even accessed copyrighted material online would render one's computer open to search without a warrant. Fines and other penalties would apply to refusing permission for a search...even viewing a website containing material that infringes a copyright — without the viewer being aware of said infringement's existence — would be considered aiding and abetting the infringement.

If true, this thing is horrible.

oh god you hit the one law i HATE with a passion. it is putting small business's out of business. it forced 2 motorycycle dealerships to close because they can't sale youth motorcycles (wich make up 80% of there sales).

Ahh ok, the individual right to steal other peoples stuff, got it.

really did you READ what the law is?

IF they even SUSPECT you of having downloaded anything they have the RIGHT to search and seize your computer without a warrant.

not to mention the RIAA and such would have the bility to have a "force" to invistagate. WTF hopefully it does not pass. but it will someday.

While I don't think this is the way to go about it, don't think the consumer holds no responsibility for this.

many people got this mentality that they deserve anything IP-related any way they want, and if they can't have it that way then fuck you they're going to download it.

not to mention Disney made its fortune by stealing others work and claiming it as theirs.

I read it, it's bad enforcement. Like Ns1 said though it's not like the people aren't to blame. It's been tried the civil way, that didn't work, they stepped it up and that didn't work, now they are going to bring down the hammer and people are crying about it. How about if people stop fucking stealing shit?

Sounds like the Obama administration is a part of this from the DailyTech article.

How is that constitutional?

How about these media nazis respect our constitution?

how about people respect intellectual property and stop downloading everything that they should instead be paying for?
So I should face having them search my computer without a warrant because I happen to visit a site that has Copyrighted Material for access? And if I refuse they can fine me even if I am innocent which I can assure you I would be.

I agre 100% people need to stop stealing shit.

but that does not give them the right to come into your house or scan your computer WITHOUT A WARRENT. we have courts and procedure's for stuff for a reason.

We are sopposed to have rights. to give them up to a COMPANY is bullshit and the cowards way out.

they want to stop it? i'm all for a legal and constitutional investigation.

IF this does pass i would expect to be shot down in a few years because it is against the Constitution.

exactly. no matter what you are paying them.

but don't worry..the RIAA wouldn't abuse it!

How about fuck you?

Copyright has become an abomination. Society is built on the ideas of those who have come before us. The fact that our now nearly eternal copyright allows corporations to lock it up so nobody else can use it doesn't bother you?
