The Descent

you have to watch it

I normally don't promote horror movies, just sometimes recommend a good one here or there. But damned if that wasn't one of the better horror movies I've seen... it really works and makes great use of claustrophobia.

bought in on Blu-Ray and watched on my 32" Sharp Aquos. if only I had a 60" or something along those lines to truly enjoy 1080p BDs. But 720p definitely is enjoyable. Sound was pretty good too. (hmm, and i enjoyed it even with the strong presence of black crush.. going to have my set calibrated soon)
helping factor for enjoyment? dunno, but found it great.

edit:
btw here are some ratings:
Rotten Tomatoes: 84%
IMDB: 7.5
Movies.com:A-; and the Critics:A; and the fans: B+

i agree it was a pretty damn good horror movie, especially considering what has been out recently. it really REALLY makes you feel claustrophobic. I almost wish I saw it in the theatre now to get more of a claustrophobic feeling on the big screen.

i am looking forward to picking up the texas chainsaw massacre begins when it hits dvd next month. that movie also rocked.

as far as the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre goes.... was it better than the other one, the first movie (recent remake)

I hated watching that movie.
I had to close my eyes numerous times

is this a good thing, as far as the movies goes (horror genre)? 😉

Nice, I bought it on Blu-Ray as well!

it went very well with it. i was a huge fan of the remake, and i'll say I was not disappointed one bit at the prequel to it. it puts pieces together so well and was a freaky ass movie.

if you liked the first remake, you will like the prequel.

and yes, having the Descent have only a female cast (w/the exception of some dude in the opening scenes) that didn't hurt it one bit 😀

I saw it in the theater. I just bought the dvd an hour ago.

I'm look'n forward to seeing the "other" ending that the rest of the world saw.

Other than evoking a claustrophobic atmosphere, I thought it was terribly dull & walked out of the theater 45 minutes into the movie.

Yeah, the action doesn't start till around the 45min point... so you missed the best parts. I watched this awhile ago and I liked it very much. UK ending>US ending.

I watched that in the theater. Very good!!! That asian girl in there is HOT.

That would be Natalie Mendoza, and I think she was pretty hot too. 🙂

The million dollar question though is whether the monsters in the cave were real, or just part of Sarah's f*cked up imagination. Discuss. 😛

Personally, I don't think the movie ever implied that it was her imagination. Too many people try to find hidden meanings in movies these days.

That and the fact that there will be a sequel pretty much stomps the "imagination" theory. 😉

shuana mcdonald or whatever was cute in spooks(mi5), atleast the few bits she was in. btw theres a different ending between american and uk releases.

no spoilers in this thread i hope!

The first hour was really good, great atmosphere and suspense. Then it added monsters like every other horror movie ever made. I think it's a cheap way to make a movie scary. Such a cop-out.

It would have been better if it had been psychological for the entire movie instead of just adding underground demons.

as far as psychological movies go... watch Session Nine.

it would have been sweet to see The Descent go all psychological.
I could find flaws and say there should have at least been a LOT less of the little pesky creatures, but I thought it was entertaining and did exactly what I wanted the movie to do.
a psychological thriller is great but don't enjoy the same enjoyment factor after multiple viewings. a few good horror movies can be watched a couple times and still keep a good enjoyment going.
im actually looking forward to watching it a second time.

what is good about psychological thrillers, however, is watching them a couple years after the first time, especially if you have forgotten a lot of what the twists were. i did that with Session Nine and it was really good the second time around.

The plates on the vehicles had North Carolina plates. Was it filmed there or ? I didnt watch the credits at the ending.

The other day I saw the movie "The Cave" on TV. I thought it was the same movie as The Descent (as I forgot that movie's name until I looked it up upon seeing your post).

That movie was a huge knockoff of The Descent from what I gather, and it sucked to boot. Not scary at all. Mostly boring.

It had some actors which I had seen before so I thought it was legit (as in, The Descent).

I'll have to watch The Descent sometime 😀
