Politics and people who run for office or seek to hold government jobs are more interested in the paycheck than doing their jobs ethically. Any effort to be ethical in such professions can cause trouble. Most people have Stockholm Syndrome and are easily broken.

Joni Ernst folded sounds like. A female vet who has been raped before. Wow. Way to stand up there Joni. I can't wait to hear Susan Collins' strong reservations. Cowards.

Feels like we're probably going to have the incredibly unqualified philandering drunk loser Hegseth as SoD.

America and her allies deserve better than this clown.

-The beauty of Democracy is that we get exactly the government we deserve.

IMO you don't get to the point of "YOLO let's vote for the biggest nitwit in the room" without first eroding the basis of democracy for generations. For example poor education, poor investment in infrastructure, conservative policies of tax breaks for the rich and selling stuff off cheap to their friends; the first of those points takes decades to achieve maximum effect.

I disagree with the UK's Labour government on a fair few topics but I think they realise the underlying problem is that they need to heal the public's faith in the traditional system of government, which is why they're (seemingly) trying to fix as much (and as quickly) as they possibly can: They need to go into the next election honestly saying that they've fixed tonnes of stuff, and most importantly for the public to actually be able to see those benefits. Otherwise the slide to the far right will continue as long as the electorate is disenfranchised with traditional forms of government: Too many people vote with their feelings because either they don't have the ability to see the bigger picture and/or they see things as steadily getting worse, so they vote for "break shit up" candidates.

The UK is maybe one or two election cycles behind the US in our descent. We've already done a few post-truth stunts like voting Boris Johnson in as well as Brexit, and the traditional conservative party is losing ground to further right parties and becoming further right themselves.

You seem to forget that the SCOTUS gave Trump a get out a jail free card.
This should have been over 2-3 years before that happened. 5 years just to get a report?

On July 1, 2024, the Supreme Court issued a 6–3 decision vacating the decision from the Court of Appeals and holding that presidents had immunity from criminal prosecution for acts conducted under their core constitutional authority as president and presumptive immunity for all official acts, but did not have immunity for any private acts.
Is insurrection an official act?

If a magat brings up DEI in the military, I remind them if they support a traitor, insurrectionist, sexual predator and felon for CiC, their opinon on the military is completely worthless to me.
See? DEI even stole the I from Military!

As an American, I believe our downfall to be the inevitable result of the Internet... simply existing.

Free nations have deluded themselves with hubris and did not guard the signal of Democracy from the noise of anarchy and madness. From human nature.
It took centuries to build the notions of liberty upon which of civilization stands. It will not take nearly that long to poison the minds of our people and turn them against Democracy.

Our institutions will not survive the onslaught of madness the internet has wrought over them. Journalism was our life blood. The loss of our information filter and qualified reporting means the end of all things. Who we were is being erased. New beliefs and a new, fragmented, civilization will emerge from the ashes. And it will not resemble the Democracy of our forebears. No, we will return to the dystopian nightmare humans find normal. Where belief Trumps science and an enslaved society bows to their master.

Worst SCOTUS decision in recent history. Contender for the all time title.
I think there's a decent argument for it being the worst.

It doesn't immediately hurt people in the way that Korematsu or Dredd Scott did but it's the first decision I can think of that stands a strong likelihood of ending American democracy.

As others have mentioned the complaints about DEI are that individuals hired through those initiatives are unqualified for their jobs. Hegseth of course is almost comically unqualified for the position but because he's a white man it's somehow not an issue.
Complaining about "DEI" is just the newest way to disparage anyone who isn't a white man. It's just become the politically acceptable way to say things in place of verboten words.

That would be exactly my argument.

Very recently they made the Fn president immune from prosecution. I think that tops that.

There are so many to choose from. While not the worst, I think DC vs heller was pretty bad as it took a states right and turned it into a right that did the exact opposite, make it so that states couldn’t protect themselves/population.

Man, this guy Hegseth is horrible. Who needs a Reichstag fire when the place is already a self-cleaning oven?

My prediction is this Hegseth will be one of the first Trump cabinet appointees to go. I give him six months.16 Scaramuccis. I can’t imagine it will be long before a revelation emerges or his stupidity of not knowing what the fuck he's doing. At that point Trump will throw him under the bus while claiming to have barely known the fucking guy. Not like it matters. At some point, following these hearings is like self-flagellation. They’re all going to be confirmed. Even Gaetz would have been easily confirmed if everyone in Washington didn’t absolutely hate him.

They should have asked Hegseth .... “Would you hire an individual who cannot get a security clearance for the Secretary of Defense position?”

RFK Jr says he no longer wants to cripple tens of thousands of children every year.

Well, that’s good of him. Of course, he could just be lying to get approval from the GOP. He’s been very consistent in his hatred of vaccines for years now, and you don’t just turn 180 degrees on something like that in a matter of days. I mean, what has anyone said in the last week or so, that he wouldn’t have already heard, and dismissed, years ago? Well, “Back off on polio or we won’t confirm you” fits that bill.

None of the candidates will say anything close to controversial now or in a confirmation hearing. They have all learned from Trump that you can lie without any consequences.

- 100% this guy is full of shit just so he doesn't put Republicans in an awkward spot during the confirmation hearing.
