The Democrats' Tin Ear

In almost every important social or cultural discussion of the past decade, the Democratic Party has either shunned religiously based Americans, or ignored them.

On these and other issues, the Democratic elites have told people of religious faith: Leave your religious beliefs at home.

A stark example of this occurred in 1992 at the Democratic convention in New York. Bill Clinton's first nominating convention. Robert P. Casey was the Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania. He was a successful politician supported by working-class Democrats, union members, minorities and millions of Pennsylvanians.

He was scheduled to deliver a speech stating that his party's mission was to fight for the underdog -- the sick, the old, the poor. However, he also wanted to included the "unborn."

He never gave that speech. He got the hook !

On gay marriage, 11 states this week defined marriage as a union of a man and a woman. One of them was Ohio, perhaps the key state in preventing John Kerry from winning. Senator Kerry had said, yes, he believed marriage was between a man and a woman, but, no, he would not support a constitutional amendment giving that concept the force of law.

Democrats will suffer at the ballot box if they are tone deaf to social morality and refuse to talk about them in moral terms. They don't have to abandon their principles, but they do have to be willing to listen to people of religious faith inside the Democratic Party. Many Democrats are uncomfortable with abortion on demand. Many Democrats favor civil unions for homosexuals but oppose gay marriage.

Bill Clinton knew this. He signed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. It stated that if one state defined marriage to include gay unions, other states did not have to recognize gay marriages in their own states. President Clinton may not have been enthusiastic about the law, but he signed it knowing it was a popular thing to do. It was also good politics.

Pander. Well if they " Pander " these voters will see through it. Respect them and they'll earn their vote.

Kerry found this out too late in the campaign. But near the end, he was always in some southern gospel church.

I don't see how Kerry campaigning to secure the vote of people who are religious would violate what you posted

This is all becoming very self-evident to many many people, but most of the Bush-Haters here are the extreme ideological nuts and are blind to the current political climate. They are thoroughly removed from the realities of our times... in another forum this might be worth something, but in here it will only fall on deaf ears (even though those are the ears that need it most).

Everyone agrees.

But this thread is about why the dems didn't get elected.

When part of your "base" is religous, you can't ignore them.

Respect them? Well that's up to the Democratic party to decide. IMO they get the respect they deserve which isn't much from me. In fact we really should treat them like they treat gays. But then I'm not running for office nor am I a Democrat so I can be honest. When they stop passing judgment on others based on their archaic mythical beliefs then I will stop passing judgment on them.

These voters that " might have " voted Kerry exercised their free speech and voted President Bush because of the Democratic Partys " Pandering " to the Far left wing in this reguard.

It seems to me that I saw bush take a state by a few percent yet the defintion of marriage issue passed by like 7x%. If it were all right wing fundies whered the other 20 odd percent come from?

these "what's wrong with the democrats" threads are becoming just as annoying as the "Bush is stupid" threads.

This is not a " what's wrong with the Democrats " this is why they " lost " thread. And it wasn't " just " the Presidential race by the way. This is also not a " bashing " Democrats thread as well. IMO, the " Party " embraced the far left and abandoned the moderate voters or at least took them for granted.

After a presidential election, two things are major topics: Why did the loser lose and why did the winner win?

We have to try and make sense of what's happening.

I don't think something in widespread practice can be defined as archaic.

When they finally figure out that it's far more than the "fundies" they need to pander to, they may finally get on the right track.
