The Demise of Dating

When did this country become so pussified?
Why cant they just call "fucking" fucking?
Why do they have to soften it with "hooking up"?
I thought hooking up just meant getting together. Now it means fucking because people are too soft & delicate to say "fuck" or "one-night-stand" or "fuck-buddy".

/END 29 year-old rant.

Because, as with many words, "fuck" has many differing connotations to different people.

To be fair, hooking up doesn't necessarily mean fucking. In my experience, it usually means making out and getting to 2nd base, but it can certainly go all the way.

im 27 hooking up DOES NOT MEAN fucking

Under the old model, you dated a few times and, if you really liked the person, you might consider having sex. Under the new model, you hook up a few times and, if you really like the person, you might consider going on a date.

my wife and I met under the new model

I agree, hooking up can mean anything from just hanging out with someone all the way up to and including fucking.

It's one of those crazy, catch-all kind of things.

hooking up does not mean just hanging out with someone.. definitely fucking. if you just made out you say you made out

I'm 21 and it does, and doesn't, mean fucking.
😉
I start with the notion that it definitely means something happened that night, and I go as far as believing either one person had the intention of it going further, or it in fact did progress to fucking.

Either way it was hooking it up.
I only have this retarded definition of it, because I originally wanted it to mean simply fucking, but... some people I have met are like you are say it when they just made out that night or something. So, now I have both sides of it on my mind whenever I hear it, and I always now have to ask: so... how far did it go? Usually someone else in the conversation also agrees and is confused on the apparent dual-meaning of the word, depending on the person.

Actually, it used to be too delicate a topic to discuss in polite company.

We haven't "regressed" to using euphamisms; we've slid downhill into making it a topic for chit chat. The more this is casual dinner conversation, the closer we get to using vulgar terms without a second thought. The "good old days" of non-pussification aren't behind us, they're ahead of us.

Ah, for the antiquated concept of not kissing and telling.

Ding ding ding. And I hate it. It basically means that every guy, when he marries, is going to get sloppy thirty-seconds. Not to mention it's just...way too casual. I guess I'm just an old softy wanting things to be the way they used to..

I'm 20, btw 😛

Seriously - we're on the first page and NOBODY had connected dots between a black dude named Charles M. Blow lecturing us on how it's all about the hookups?

I concur. Meh, I've learned to accept the fact that at 24 I'm no longer going to be any girls' first, I had 1 more than I deserved that way (2 😛).

You stud you.

Yoga tonight, do it.

There have been numerous books about the "hook up culture" already. This is somewhat old news.

I went through the traditional courtship style with my GF. Aside from gaining weight from eating out all the time and being low on funds, I preferred it over prior "hook up" type relationships that went from friends to relationship in 0 seconds.

That's the issue. Everyone seems to have their own definition of what "hooking up" entails.

True.
Hooking up for me is, bumpin' uglies. Well, it used to be.
Now it's back to getting a lucky boob feel with the wife again.
