The Dell Thread

I think that many unnecessarily criticize Dell. Yes, they don't exactly sell the most High-End systems possible, but they're aiming their products at the majority of the public. The majority of the public isn't informed about computers, nor have they even heard of AMD. Companies such as Dell and HP/Compaq help bridge the electronics world with the computer illiterate general public.

Most consumers of pre-configured desktops have no idea that it's possible to assemble their own computer tailored to their needs for a much cheaper price. They don't know the difference between an Antec power supply and some "Bob's Best!" generic PSU. With brands such as Dell, consumers can relax knowing that their computers have an extremely low chance of failing on them because of hardware issues. And, if such a case arises, there's always Customer Support.

Now, I know that this is where many come to despise Dells. It's true that some of the Indian Dell representatives will not understand some heavy accents, they will fully comprehend most of the times. I own two Dells, one of them being a desktop. I bought it, a Dimension 4300, in November of 2001. So far, I've had one hard drive crash (last month, courtesy of a Western Digital Caviar), and just a few days ago my DVD drive started to show its age, needing several tries to successfully read disks. Despite these hardware troubles, I had my hard drive ordered in 15 minutes, including hold time, on a weekend. Yesterday, during peak times at 7PM ET, I called them up, waited 8 minutes on hold, and then talked with a representative for about 15 minutes, all that ending with a replacement DVD drive being sent to my home. Dell will cover all charges, including shipping both ways, because I purchased a 3-year warrenty. I understand that many don't like to buy extended warrenty, but that's one of the main reasons to purchase a system from a name brand company.

I don't advocate the idea that Dell computers are the most rock solid systems in the world, but most consumers are not going to lose a thousand dollars or more every hour of downtime, but that's what IBM, Toshiba, and Dell Small Business's servers and elite warrenty plans, and maybe even an onsite IT are for. Rather, Dell fullfills the need of the people who just want to get to the internet, check mail, and play the occasional game. Let me repeat, Dell Dimensions are not aimed towards the Gaming or Business sectors of consumers. Alienware and IBM take care of that. But, with those companies comes a hefty price tag. Dell's are cheaper, and pretty much bargains during good sales. I am by no means starting a flame war, but please be open-minded about computer buyers who don't educate themselves on technology by coming to sites such as Anandtech. Thanks for considering my thoughts and feel free to share your opinions and reasoning.

Dells are good because Dells are cheap. Thats about it.

In the last year... my Dell laptop has had the following part changed under warranty:

1) Battery - Went beserk and started overheating.
2) Hard Disk - The controller card stopped working.
3) Optical Drive - Stopped recognizing DVDs
4) Keyboard - Space bar stopped working
5) Power Adapter - Started overheating and making a buzzing sound.

I got good prompt service. However, the quality is not exactly good, because these parts malfunctioned with the 1st year.

I'm typing this on a dell latitude D800

Good screen. Ok speed.

Worst keyboard of any laptop I've used in my entire life (I've had 7). The thing is so cheap you can actually see the left side bow down as you typde on the keys. I took it apart and it's simply cheap build quality. Very flimsy construction.

I would expect that on a low end cheap model but this is the top of Dells business line.

I came close to getting an 8600 last week. As abhi said, just because it is cheap. Glad I didn't, this next laptop will be on my own dime and I want something decent, not just a dell.

I was wondering why you are posting about dimensions in a notebook forum, then I realized this forum is also for pre-built PCs? First time I ever saw that, is it new? No one seems to come here for pre-built advice.

So this forum covers SFF, Notebooks, Pre-built and barebones Pcs?

What the heck is with that, you mean it is for every PC you don't build yourself, and even ones built yoursef if they are a SFF or a laptop? Why don't they just rename the colum: Anything you buy that already has a motherboard in it or is small?

What are you smoking? ^^^ 🙂

Dell makes decent stuff for the money, I bought a refurbed Dell 8300 for under $400 delivered with some coupons.

The CPU , ram , hard drive and video card would cost me $550 if I bought them from Newegg...being a do it yourselfer I cannot lose no matter how long the PC lasts because I can part it out and recover all of my money plus some. 🙂

BUT, I am not..I have another PC for my tweaking needs and I am going to use the Dell and see how long it lasts. So far so good though , the real test will come next week when I put it to work decoding DVDs full time.

some magic mushroom ?

for some deal, dell cant be beat and i dont have a lot of money so dell is the way to go for me. and if i buy something for family or friends, it will be dell. It is a b!tch to be someone tech support.

I still use my DELL XPS 450 that I have had since 1998. I am about to retire it even though we have been through alot together. 🙁 In 1998 it was my gaming system but now it is just my internet/email computer. Except for the initial hard drive going out of it in 1998 ( which they sent a tech out and replaced it) I have not had any problems in over 6 years! The only problem I have with DELL is now they do not put AGP slots on their business systems. But hey where can you buy a good business machine for that kind of money?

The place I used to work used all Dell servers, desktops, and laptops. The servers were pretty reliable but expensive for what you get. The desktops - Optiplex GX-150 & GX-240 models - were also fairly reliable with most of the failures being HD related. One annoying issue was noisy power supply and CPU fans. The laptops - mostly Latitude C610 models - were terrible. They ran hot, constantly had keyboard/mouse issues, display problems, and HD failures out of nowhere. I wouldn't consider a Dell laptop without a warranty that covers it for the entire time you plan to own it.

Edit: Forgot to add, I know several people running the low-end Dell PowerEdge SC400 for casual use and none of them have had an issue that I know of. Great buy if you get them on a special. I think these were $350 - $400 after rebates.

I think they can be good buys IF you get them with a good coupon, rebate etc. If you just go in and pick out a system you are going to get ripped off for what you are buying.

It worked wonders for my dell's keyboard.

OMG Abhi

That looks great

I really wish I had that guide when I took my D800 keyboard off the last time.

My only concer is that the base of the keyboard is filled with vent holes and the doublesided tape in that mod covers them up.

Does your fan come on more after making the mod?

do you intend to take the tape off when you need to have dell support the laptop?

BTW my no confidence vote is due to the inspiron laptops. If I read the first post first and saw he was talking about desktops/dimmensions in my laptop forum, I would have probably voted yes.

Dell desktop/servers are well built. I own both a desk (L800R) and a Server Poweredge 600 and both are rock solid. It's just dells desktop quality that seems to be slow sliding into mediocraty.

Witness the recent dell laptop deals. Great deals until you try to get 3 years support. Then pull out your wallet and spend $300 on a $800 laptop for support. That's worse than bestbuys....

No the fan does not come on any more than what it used to...

Also, the mod is TOTALLY and safely reversible. Just experiment a bit with what suits you best. Use the minimum tape that does the job. It works amazingly.

Also, I simply removed the tape before the Dell tech came. Thats the only way of not voiding your warranty.
