Pearl Jam would have been nothing without Nirvana. Also, their music sucks ass.
 
Pearl Jam was going to be my answer before I clicked, and it still is.

There's plenty of bands from the 90s I liked better, but I think they're 'the answer' to the question.

Two of my favorite 90s albums would be Pearl Jam's Ten and Nirvana's Unplugged in New York. But I'd still vote for Pearl Jam as the more talented and definitive band. I just wish their more recent stuff was as good as Ten/Vs/Vitalogy. I just can't get into Binaural and Riot Act and haven't even given a proper listen to their self-titled album.

In the pop arena, I am not sure who would win: Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls (blockbuster debut, lackluster followup, eventually fading into Bolivian), Mariah Carey or Celine Dion all shifted massive units and had wide popularity. I think the Backstreet Boys would win, considering the number of copycat acts they 'inspired'.

And even though they had been around since before there was dirt on the earth... Metallica became a bigger force in rock than lava in the 90's.

And then there's Celine Dion... But I think it's in everyone's best interest to pretend like she (and that horriffic, god forsaken country she came from) never existed.

All that said... My pick for the definitive band of the 90's... and one of the most influential bands in history... One that came on and left like a super nova...

Yeah I said it. Yeah they formed in the late 80's but they peaked in the early 90's and their original material still reverberates today.

Pearl Jam was and is huge, but not all of their songs are instantly identifiable not most people.
Everyone knows a Nirvana song when they hear it, Nirvana came out first and was more popular in the beginning, and Curt Cobain killed himself.

It's either Nirvana or Pearl Jam. PJ is what popped into my head at thread title, and I think cases could easily be made for both. Nirvana had more influence, PJ maybe had more popularity?

I have to say reading "Creed" in the OP makes me want to hurt someone. I have never hated a band more than Creed... except maybe Nickelback. I love David Cross when he gets going on Creed in his shows.

Why? Pretty much all of those bands are "pop"ular, so it stands to reason they would be regarded as the best American band. It's certainly not going to be some obscure indie band that no one knows.

e: As for definitive 90s band, which is the topic of this thread, I'd go with The Smashing Pumpkins or Dave Matthews (even though I don't like him, I do know I constantly had to deal with legions of his fans talking about him endlessly around me).
 
I think Nirvana takes the top spot, but I agree with the following contenders, STP, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, and would like to add, Alice in Chains, and Local H for their one hit wonder.

Have to agree, WTF, Creed sucks, and not just mildly but...
Besides they are unimportant, they neither set the mood for the decade, or were the final product, but a piece of crap that fell out somewhere on the way through it.

Nirvana on the other hand set the tone, and burned out so fast as to be damn near unforgettable.
