Can anyone who speaks or knows (some) latin tell me what this means?

I heard that it meant 'From God'.

So, really, Deux Ex is just a truncated version of Deus Ex Machina... that makes sense.

No not "from god". "God from"! I think it's originally Greek. Deios ex mekhina or something.

Yeah, from what I remember, deus ex machina is generally used to describe scenes in movies and books in which a character is stuck in an "unwinable" situation, and then the author, knowing that he's written himself into a corner, suddenly makes a solution appear out of nowhere. I think the Harry Potter series was criticized for this.
