Luckily the damage seems to be all cosmetic. I'd say I got very lucky.
Bonus photo of me using a legit payphone to call for a tow.

40 years ago, we lived in western Wyoming. The locals said there were three kinds of drivers…those who had hit a deer or elk, those who would hit a deer or elk, and those who lied about hitting a deer or elk.

Given the outcome, you're not wrong and I'm glad for it!

Now the painful part is finding a good autobody shop.
How good was the phone? I remember after deregulation Regulation?(I feel like there's a better word that isn't coming to me), a bunch of also-ran companies stuck their payphones everywhere, and I don't think a single one I used was as good as the Bell monopoly phones. Calls were crackly, and unclear, and seemed like the phones weren't as well cared for. To my untrained/uncaring eye, they looked like the same hardware, but if they didn't have a Bell tag, they sucked.

The phone was surprisingly decent. It's located about 20 miles from "town" and there's zero cell coverage. Luckily the call to AAA didn't require quarters!
You mean you didn't take the fresh deer carcass home to skin and cut the steaks?
It didn't die....or at least not immediately. It wandered off the road under it's own power. Had it been killed in the impact, my car (and I) would have likely been much worse off!

Ooof.

Funny deer story from yesterday: the entry road to our local airport has a bunch of deer statues my wife and I noticed when I dropped her off a few days ago. When I picked her up yesterday evening and we started to leave, she said "watch out for the deer" jokingly because of the statues, and then one of them moved because it was actually a deer, lol.
