The Debt Ceiling Crisis: What Should Obama Do?

  • Give in to the Republicans demands by slashing Medicare and Social Security

  • Allow the country to default on its debt

  • Invoke the 14th Amendment and risk impeachment

I say he calls another press conference, proposes only tax increases and loophole closures, then a D-X crotch-chop and call it a day.

Or just explain that Congress has the power of the purse and it ain't his problem to solve for the whiny bitches.

The moron can't even figure out how to close Gitmo do we really think he can fix the economy/debt?

ah, yes, tangents that mean nothing to the topic... and I don't expect President Obama to fix everything; however I really love to see the opposition do something other than Veruca Salt and keep crying "I want it now! NOW! NOW! NOW!"

I WANT IT NOW!!!!

He hasn't really fixed ANYTHING, but yes.. I guess that's a tangent...

But let me get this straight. We are spending 1.5 trillion more per year than we earn. It seems like Obama is the one screaming NOW NOW NOW.

The last time our system was in measure, that would under be President Clinton - am I wrong...

Ask GWB... Shit happens in this world - for better or worse; that some of you have the wish to ignore what's in your face; it matters not what I type on this little keyboard....

"GWB WHO?" It's the answer I get back from those many repubs who practice the fine art of selective memory loss every time I ask them the question: "Wasn't GWB in charge and did he or did he not encourage us to take the trip down this muddy boggy road to financial disaster and distress in the first place?"😀

If no deal is available by the deadline, raise the debt ceiling himself via the 14th Amendment. Even though the legality is questionable large parts of Congress have decided not to do their jobs at our expense so at that point....fuck it, let them sue.

When the equities markets are going into the toilet and there is a run on the banks there isn't going to be a lot of hand wringing about the fine print constitutionality of it all coming from the public.

We are STILL paying for GWB's mistakes. Anyone with half a brain can see that.

Trillion dollar Iraq war....check.
Massive tax cuts for the wealthy without any spending cuts to makeup for lost revenue...check.
Biggest financial crisis in recent history....check.

Obama took over at a time when our country was, and still is, reeling from the calamity that was GWB. It will take a LONG time before we are back on track.

What I think Obama should do:

Call out the Republicans. Explain to the public the history of the debt ceiling; how it's not an appropriate outlet for anti-spending politics, the budget is; how it's been raised 102 times before, and never not been raised by either party. Explain how not raising it now may help Republicans' politics by hurting the country, but it'll be pointless waste.

Then demand the Congress pass the normal one-sentence increase - presumably with all Democrats and enough Republicans. If Republicans really oppose it the blame is clear.

The 14th amendment I'm not sure about - if he can, use it, if not, don't, it's a legal issue. At the same time, put out a plan for deficit reduction *during the budget debate*.

The country doesn't want a short term extension. It needs certainty to plan and invest.

Or, in reality, the administration doesn't want this to be a political issue prior to the election so it wants a way to make it go away until after 2012. Lets not pretend it's about anything else.

This is amazing. The Republicans created this mess with the Bush Tax Cuts and wars. The Republicans have created the crisis by not voting for raising the Debt limit. And the forum's Republican supporters or at least the anti-Obama crew* are saying that Mr Obama should resign and or risk impeachment over this.

*You know the guys who were blaming Mr Obama for the Great Recession back in November 2008.

Of those I voted for the 14th amendment.

Nope.

White House spokesman Jay Carney, when questioned about Clyburn's proposal, said that only Congress has the authority to extend the government's borrowing authority. "The president does not have the authority to raise the debt ceiling. It's not a plausible way to address this problem and we do not think it is an option,"/QUOTE]

You can officially drop that fantasy now.

The extension to ~2013 isn't some outlandish request. Extensions of that length aren't new or uncommon. /tinfoil

I don't have a problem with the tax cuts however I do have a problem with the government spending what it wants and worrying about it later. The wars were paid for with nothing and eventually the hens came home to roost. These people really do suck.
