Hey there folks. I was just doing a little research regarding WINS and was wondering if somebody could point me in the right direction.

I'm trying to find out more about the eventual phasing out of WINS....mostly just what has to be done to completely phase it out when developing a network. I haven't really been able to find much other than basic overviews, but most of these argue that we still need to use WINS. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

just remember that many times applications rely on netbios naming to work.

unfortunatlely WINS is still needed depending on the network.

Yep, quite a few networking devices just work better with both WINS and DNS. Also, any Win95/98/NT machine will need WINS. Just about the only place you would be able to get away without it is when all you have is Win2k/XP machines with 2000/2003 servers.

Edit: Or all Linux/Unix with BIND DNS ;)
